Truth is Andy is right. Tsitsipas wasn't behaving like a true champion. There are things in life that you shouldn't be doing. They don't teach you this in school. Personally, I would suggest giving 5 set matches intermissions. Completely get rid of bathroom breaks and injury timeouts and instead have a preplanned 15 minute intermission at the end of the 2nd and 4th sets. The idea isn't so that players have more time or less time for breaks. The idea is that everyone knows what's going to happen ahead of time. You can't just take a break in reaction to how the match is going. You can get treatment during the changeover but no extra time should be allotted. But you'll get 15 minutes every two sets to do whatever you want. Get a massage, take a long bathroom break, have a freaking martini for all I care. It'll be fair because everyone knew what would happen and when it will end. For the record, the current system is not fair to the fans either, who have no idea when play will resume and could take that time to be going to bathroom, getting food and drink, or checking in on another match on the grounds. Also, the broadcast crew could take that time and present a segment on the match. A real deep dive on something they want to highlight from the match. I would love for tennis broadcast teams to have an analyst desk that got to discuss the match as it's happening during these intermissions. Complete with infographics and replay analysis.
@tomsd8656
2 жыл бұрын
Tennis is a game of momentum. How are you going to determine when the intermission is? If it's one set all, or two sets all, then the break, OK, but what if it's 2-0, are you going to give intermission? The leading player is going to fume.
@bonzwah1
2 жыл бұрын
@@tomsd8656 first of all, it is impossible for the intermission at the end of the 4th set to be anything other than 2 sets all... ...so lets discuss only the 2 set to love situation. please consider the current system. you value momentum and want to reduce interruptions to momentum right? well currently the losing player can, at any time, take an injury timeout in reaction to a particularly strong passage of play from their opponent. in other words, they can sense the moment their opponent's momentum is strongest...and specifically target that moment for interruption to have a freaking massage. also, the tsitsipas incident has shown that you can take a bathroom break at the end of the set and you can take as long as you want. so your opponent has to just sit there and wait, not having any idea how long they will have to wait. again, the losing player can use this to take longer if their opponent has more momentum. so if you value momentum, you should hate this system. What I propose limits these interruptions to exactly 1 time every 2 sets. it will occur no matter what the game state is, so it has equal chances of interrupting either player and therefore is completely fair. if you truly value momentum, you should have been cringing for years at the constant abuse of the injury timeout and the now very public abuse of the bathroom break. So while I understand that you don't like that momentum could be interrupted once with my system at 2 set to love, I hope you will recognize that that is LESS interruption to momentum than the current system allows for.
@tomsd8656
2 жыл бұрын
@@bonzwah1 good points, but the whole point of bathroom break is for real emergency. I would treat tennis player like Olympic athlete. You don't go to bathroom alone. There will be someone with you at all time, even while you do your thing. And you will be stripped of everything before you go in. If you make it look like that you assume a bathroom break is an opportunity to cheat, they will start getting the message. It would make the other player feel better that the guy taking the break is guarded at all time. Basically you need to make the guy taking the break feel uncomfortable. If it's a real break, he wouldn't mind, but if it's fake, the scrutiny should discourage them.
@bonzwah1
2 жыл бұрын
@@tomsd8656 I definitely think what you suggest is an improvement to the current system. But there is still opportunity to use the break to disrupt momentum. A player can always use the bathroom when they don't really need to. As long as something comes out, who is to guage what an "emergency" is? Unfortunately, rules really should be precisely worded and strictly enforceable. My system is both of these things, managing to completely eliminate gamesmanship while still reducing interruption relative to what is possible in the current system.
@tomsd8656
2 жыл бұрын
@@bonzwah1 agree, but if they really have a bathroom emergency and can't go, then the only way is forfeit, though that would rarely happen. Another way to make it uncomfortable for rhe guy taking break is special portatoilet for breaks. Camera in the toilet will have to detect something. If you go for 10 min but pee just a little, you'll get point/game penalty.
