Just watched a live performance video of Andy back in 2013 at the streamlive cafe. He had two friends on stage play a few songs with him. Fast forward all these years and those friends are still on stage with him. I don't know why but it made me like him that much more...

Andy writes some really unique stories that, on their face, aren't "really" that interesting such as a guy sitting at a bar thinking about his ex ... "Where are you, Judy?" But then his music sets the scene, the vibe, and his delivery transforms a very simple story into a piece of art. "Living Room" is a great example. He has a real "superpower" for transporting you into a world he created, which for me, always lasts longer than the song. The Neon Skyline album, in a lot of ways, is a modern version of the show "Cheers!" The setting is a bar, each song a different episode, the same set, and cast, quirky/ironic humor with a few punchlines here and there - all backed by Andy and his band. Not everyone will get Andy Shauf, which to me, makes his songs all the more intimate.

I listened to Andy on a podcast where he cited the short story author Raymond Carver as a favorite. Carver is super efficient with his details and finds the gritty humanity in the small moments. I’m reading the collection Where I’m Calling From right now. Highly recommend, especially for fans of Andy.
