What's the reference to the codeine scene?
@Sammallam
9 жыл бұрын
Codeine is an opiate (i.e in the same family of drugs as opium, heroin and morphine): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codeine Hozier makes references throughout his music, but most especially in this song, to James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, which is about a man who becomes conflicted between his Irish Catholic upbringing and his obsession with beautiful women.
@Sammallam
9 жыл бұрын
An orgasm was known as a small death because of the state of euphoria and paralysis that it produces, much like the experience you might get from taking codeine. I think that what he's trying to say is that like a small death and codeine, sex with her kills you a little, because you hook to her like a drug, and suffer once she leaves. So kinda more like drug-sex, than drugs and sex.

I actually think about this a lot. About the title, specifically. You see with "small death" being a more literal translation from the french say "petite mort", which in actuality, means orgasm. And with codeine being a kind of pain killer, I took to interpreting. With the meaning in mind, I imagine this as some sort of far away memory that was more recent than you'd imagine. If you took codeine as some sort of metaphor to the sensation pain killers give you, one of daze, and with the codeine *scene,* this translates in an interesting way. I imagine it as the subtle memories after a particularly adventurous night. When in the morning you're only left with the faint memory of pleasure and the hazy feeling of aching limbs. With the far away features of an assumed partner. The "angel." This feels VERY weird to type out but I actually take these things very seriously. Hozier songs gave me a lot more respect for the more physical aspects of the music industry and the general expression of such. Helped me grow a little as a person, I think.

i just remarked to a dear friend that i noticed hozier's music has like this, seemingly ethereal quality when you first approach it. but when you break it down, it's ultimately about a sort of pure, unconditional love. his songs convey loving someone or something completely wholly, and if not in lyrics it's in vibes and theme. i feel it perfectly captures what's it like to be really, truly in love: to appreciate who or what you love so deeply that you feel lucky that they/it's in your life. it's the emotion, the feeling, of accepting this someone or something with your entire being and being desperately appreciative. his songs scream, "thank you, thank you, thank you, for choosing to be in my life." it's just. so gorgeous, to me. true love feels floaty, ethereal, beyond words and incomprehensible. but it's so simple once you get down to it, and i think hozier's music encapsulates that completely. people joke that he's like an elf or fae of some sort, but i think his songs truly convey what it means to be human. what it means to be alive, and to care. and i feel that caring, really and truly, is the most human thing of all. thank you, hozier.
@billiey36
5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I get so tired of the jokey way some people paint him and his music when it's as deep as you just described it. And you nailed it when you used "human". That's what his music's all about, what it's like to be human. And that's why he has such a diverse fan base. We're all human. We can all relate.

Cedes Harris because the hit came, and nobody wants any follow-up. The actual fans came, and are here to stay

Cedes Harris He has fans but not the kind of "screaming teenagers". His fans are more mature people. We'll wait for him to release his second album and attend his concerts.

People have lost their judgment of what real music is. They'd prefer to twerk to auto tuned songs that have no emotion or meaning..it's saddening to be honest

I watch the work of my kin bold and boyful Toying somewhere between love and abuse Calling to join them the wretched and joyful Shaking the wings of their terrible youths Freshly disowned in some frozen devotion No more alone or myself could I be Lurched like a stray to the arms that were open No shortage of sordid, no protest from me With her sweetened breath, and her tongue so mean She's the angel of small death and the codeine scene With her straw-blonde hair, her arms hard and lean She's the angel of small death and the codeine scene Feeling more human and hooked on her flesh I Lay my heart down with the rest at her feet Fresh from the fields, all feeder and fertile It's bloody and raw, but I swear it is sweet With her sweetened breath, and her tongue so mean She's the angel of small death and the codeine scene With her straw-blonde hair, her arms hard and lean She's the angel of small death and the codeine scene Leash-less confusion I wander the concrete Wonder if better now having survived Jarring of judgment and reasons defeat The sweet heat of her breath in my mouth I'm alive With her sweetened breath, and her tongue so mean She's the angel of small death and the codeine scene With her straw-blonde hair, her arms hard and lean She's the angel of small death and the codeine scene With her sweetened breath, and her tongue so mean She's the angel of small death and the codeine scene With her straw-blonde hair, her arms hard and lean She's the angel of small death and the codeine scene
