Anglesey Abbey was originally a priory dating from the 12th century.
Surrounded by 125 acres of woodland, cultivated gardens and sweeping parkland, woven with
paths and crossed by tree-lined avenues, it is bordered by Bottisham Lode, a tributary of the river
Cam. Both house and gardens are the creation of Urban Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord
Fairhaven, who spent 40 years realising his artistic vision. The restoration and furnishing of the
house reveal Lord Fairhaven's love of fine art and interiors and its careful but spirited preservation
show life in an aristocratic household; attention to timely domestic detail set against classic
permanence.
The house has a peaceful quality, the satisfying lines of the soft cream- coloured stone building
are interrupted only by carefully trained climbing plants.
Anglesey Abbey is picturesque and enchanting, its aspect subtly changing with the light and the
season. Indeed it is a house for all seasons, reflecting the gradual shifts in the enveloping gardening.
This house it's part of National trust in Cambridge.
