19-year China resident Jerry Grey and I discuss the case of Wayne Hsiung, co-founder of the animal rights group Direct Action Everywhere (DxE), who was recently sentenced to 3 months in prison and 2 years' probation during which he will be barred from any contact with 15 fellow activists who are among his closest friends for the "crime" of rescuing sick and dying animals from "farms" that were violating California animal welfare regulations right and left. We also discuss Wayne's investigation of the dog meat trade in Yulin, China, his rescue of dogs from "farms" there, and China's 2020 ban on dog meat.
Update: Wayne has now been released from prison, but several DxE activists, including Wayne, still face felony charges. Meanwhile, the animal agribusinesses DxE investigated have faced no charges for their widespread violations of animal welfare regulations--which would do little to protect animals from pain and suffering even if they were enforced.
