I take morality to be constituted by systems of rules constructed by rational agents for the benefit of rational agents. After outlining this perspective, I then deal with the marginal cases argument, which is the most popular objection to any view that denies animals moral standing. Next, I provide a limited defense of veganism from the point of view of human interests. I end by considering some of the sources of the sentimentality towards animals that prevails in our society.
