To commemorate the battle and their courage in the fight, The Normans made the Bayeux Tapestry whose tale I'll now recite~! Oh, King Edward, he was this guy, he was ruler, king and czar, But the apples from his family tree had fallen pretty far. When he passed away, those leeches didn't even wait a day, They all went in for the scepter like a Vegas Night Buffet! This guy Harold, Earl of Wessex, who is rocking this goatee Put his hand up high and swore, "Edward gave England to me." So he had the Archie Bishop go ahead and crown him king, But our hero said no thanks to kissing Harold's stupid ring! William of Normandy, on France's Shore, Duke since the age of 12 and hungry for more. He made a claim upon the throne flakier than a croissant, So his name would live forever in this fun and nifty font. Now with Harold the usurper, Will was wondering how to cope Then he noticed Halley's Comet and thought, "That looks pretty dope! It's the universe commanding me to make all England mine, So I'll bring some boats and horses and a jug or two of wine!" Good ol' Willy had an army, was at least 10,000 strong. They marched every day in chain-mail more annoying than a thong. Yes, their thighs were really chafing and their helmets far too tight. Maybe that's why up in Hastings, they torched everything in sight! In the middle of the battle, things were going down the drain, 'Cause the Normans heard a nasty rumor that their duke was slain. So then Willie took his helmet off to show he was alive, And the rest is TL;DR, but the gist is Harold died. (Oh, that's sad) William the Conqueror, he stole our hearts, Burned down our houses and our horses and our tarps! With his brothers Bob and Odo, he had sailed across the sea, Sure he killed a lot of people, but that's ancient history! William the Conqueror, he was so neat, When enemies mocked him, he cut off their feet! The only thing missing from this song was a mention of the Viking ruler Harald Hardrada (from Norway) who clashed with Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Stamford Bridge (where the Vikings lost, but Anglo Saxon Chronicles tell of one gnarly Norseman holding the bridge to buy the rest of the Army time to assemble and the mad lad was said to have slain up to 40 Englishmen before he was killed by a Anglo Saxon in a Half Barrel who stabbed him in the butt with a spear through the planks of the Bridge. As for Hardrada he fell with an Arrow in the Windpipe) A bit of extra History for you all.

The Bayeux Tapestry is on public display. It's in a little museum, all to itself in the town of Bayeux. You can't take photos, but its still well worth it. Plus its only about a day from Mon-Saint-Michel (basically, the real Minas Tirith). So you can see Mon-Saint-Michel in the tapestry, then see the real thing the next day. If you're ever in the town of Battle in southern England, remember that the official site of the battlefield of the Battle of Hastings is probably wrong (still has a great visitor center though). When you're walking from the train station up the road towards Battle Abbey that overlooks the battlefield (quite an uphill climb as I recall) remember that you're probably walking near the real spot where the Battle of Hasting happened, particularly so when you come up on that Roundabout. If you're ever in Caen, go to the abbey where William the Conqueror's tomb is. The Men's Abbey, or something like that. It's quite magnificent.

Lyrics (credits to the Animaniacs wiki): Yakko: Well, the normans conquered England in the year 1066 Back when Dentists weren't a thing and everyone had fleas and ticks To commemorate the battle and their courage in the fight The Normans made the Bayeux Tapestry Whose tale I'll now recite! Oh, King Edward, he was this guy! He was Ruler, King and Czar But the apples from his family tree had fallen pretty far When he passed away those leeches didn't even wait a day They all went in for the scepter like a Vegas Night Buffet! This guy Harold, earl of Sussex, who is rocking this goatee Put his hand up high and swore, "Edward gave England to me!" So he had the Archie Bishop go ahead and crown him King But our hero said no thanks to kissing Harold's stupid ring! William of Normandy, on France's Shore Duke since the age of twelve and hungry for more He made a claim upon the throne, flakier than a croissant So his name would live forever in this fun and nifty font! Now with Harold the usurper Will was wondering how to cop Then he noticed Halley's Comet and thought "That looks pretty dope! It's the Universe commanding me to make all England mine, so I'll bring some boats and horses and a jug or two of wine!" Good old Willy had an Army, was at least ten-thousand strong They marched every day in chainmail more annoying than a thong Yes, their thighs were really chafing, and their helmets far too tight! Maybe that's why after Hastings they torched everything in sight! In the middle of the battle, things were going down the drain Cause the Normans heard a nasty rumor that their Duke was slain So then Willy took his helmet off to show he was alive And the rest is TL;DR but the gist is Harold died Wakko: Oh, that's sad Yakko, Wakko and Dot: William the Conqueror, he stole our hearts Burned down our houses and our horses and our carts! With his brothers Bob and Odo he had sailed across the Sea Sure he killed alot of people but that's ancient history! William the Conqueror, he was so neat When enemies mocked him, he cut off their feet! He's probably getting tortured down in Hades by some ghoul But he's related to Elizabeth, that's why we think he's cool Yakko: Now that's a crash course in the Tapestry you'll never learn in school!

I thought that line “Sure he killed a lot of people but that’s ancient history” was more so saying “what do you expect from ancient, historical people? Of course they killed a lotta people, that’s how history is” and not “ eh, who cares that he killed so many it happened long ago”
@TheOneAndOnLEE.

@@a_person5668 True. But what I’m saying is that maybe (probably) someday, thousands of years from now, a more evolved civilization will look back at people like Hitler and Bin Laden and say “Eh, yeah those guys tried to commit genocide on an entire race/religion/culture, but so what? They all did that back then, that’s *ancient history* right?”
@TheOneAndOnLEE.

@spawnerist Right that’s what I’m saying. Obviously anyone William the Conqueror interacted with in any way is long dead, that’s why this song is okay now. Im saying I wonder how long it will be until making a song about more recent tragedies is acceptable, like this song is.

It is very likely he wasn't. The tapestry shows some signs of things getting added and removed - there is a good chance that Harold was slain in close combat, and the "arrow through the eye" was edited in to invoke the "bad guy punished by God" narration.
