Indeed. Though it's very true now days. The political divide just gets worse. Liberals are more of a problem within the USA than the conservatives. Coming from... Someone who saw both sides, but don't like either party due to being very much pro-authority. One wants to tell people what to do in their bed, the other wants to lecture people on "they're a better person", waste public tax dollars on "education", but turn around get caught with critical race theory ( or hell renames ), still believes in shitty economics rather than getting rid of a monopoly ( aka socialism or corporatism ). Conservatives and "liberals" get on my nerves due these things. Both parties are evil, you only vote, to vote against the other side, rather than actually believing in the person you are voting for. It's voting for lesser evil scenarios, rather than true voting. Judge should written it before 2010. As it would be a lot more fair and understandable. Though he would get cancelled. Liberals to me come off super fucking bigoted as they virtue signal about caring about X group, but doesn't try to engage with X group or interact with foreign media.

It's a shame because I think this concept could work with reverse King of the Hill logic. Rather then have a person who wants to keep a status quo in a changing world but it has to learn to change or fight for his values, you could have it reversed and have a group that always wants change for the better but needs to know when to hit the brakes or when even change is not good. Off the top of my head I can think of an episode that has to deal with green energy, in particular solar energy. The Goode's realize in the beginning that their house is being powered by a coal fire power plant which will make them want to instantly invest in solar energy and go off the grid. They think that this is a pure net positive but ignore the downsides like Extremely expensive Unreliable And the equipment last only a few years before they need to be replaced and cannot be recycled. As the episode goes through they run into some of these issues but stick with it until the worst case scenario happens (like maybe one of the safety features don't kick on and too much energy starts flowing through the house causing light bulbs to burst and such) Eventually they realize that this isn't working so they go back to the grid. They are bummed about this until they open their electric bill next month and find that the electric company is paying THEM because their house is feeding energy into the grid with the solar panels. This is an excellent compromise and works to the king of the hills method very well showing that while they couldn't go full blast with the change they wanted, they at least are contributing in reducing what they feel is harmful. You can easily do some thing like that was the dog trying to make it go vegan one episode only to realize how much harm they are doing to their dog... Instead of torturing it every episode. Just a badly missed opportunity I say.

This is kind of something that has bothered me in TV for awhile now. Character wants thing, gets thing and it's good at first, but then thing does something wrong, character never wants it again. Is it so hard to get a plot where after a character gets a thing they want that they can keep it even though something went wrong, and their lesson is: "I need to be more careful with thing," instead of: "I should've never had thing to begin with."? It just feels so unsatisfying and disappointing for them to get something cool only to never wish it existed just because they got careless or it got out of control all the time.

@@AkameGaKillfan777 A common version of this trope is when someone becomes more financially-successful, and they just magically become snobs, and then the story returns them back to status quo later, giving a poorly-written "money doesn't buy happiness" message. Some examples of this are an episode of Jimmy Neutron where Jimmy goes back in time to convince his father to invest in something that will make him rich. in the rewritten present timeline, Jimmy's parents are spoiled snobs, so he goes back in time to undo it. There's also an episode of Kill la Kill where Mako and her family have been living in poverty throughout the show. Then, she starts getting promoted, which gets her family in better and better living conditions. Then, one day, out of the blue, Mako and every other member of her family abruptly become spoiled brats all at the exact same time. eventually, Mako gets demoted back to her old job, and she and her family jarringly return to their original personalities and horrible living conditions while acting like nothing happened.

If you ask me, I think the message of a show like the Goode Family should be how to do the most good and making sure you're doing good for the right reasons. Like you said, one of the main problems with the Goods is that they only really do good things for self-indulgent reasons and are often ineffective at it, and that's arguably the biggest problem with the left these days. Performative activism that ultimately changers nothing. I think a show that examined what causes liberals should and shouldn't fight for in the same way King of the Hill examined what traditions conservatives should and shouldn't cling to would have a lot of potential. But sadly, we don't really have a show like this. Sure South Park makes fun of liberals, but it only really covers the obvious stuff, like cancelling people and neutering comedy being obnoxious.
@Takisan111
2 жыл бұрын
That actually sounds like it would be a much better show. Performative activism genuinely pisses me off because there are some absolutely great causes that need to be supported but far too often the people that get big in these groups are virtue signaling or just straight up hypocrites. While most of my personal beliefs have stayed the same over the years, I do try to be open to new ideas and the possibility that something I previously believed was wrong. I feel the world could be better if more people would try to do that too. And yet far too many people who usually claim to have the same personal philosophy usually are only doing it for attention. This is why people on different sides have a hard time trusting the others. Honesty is important and sometimes having an open mind really does mean that sometimes the one with the real problem is you. We can only hope that someday more people will learn to understand this. Having that be the message of The Goode Family would have been pretty cool.

I actually thought of a premise for a show right now: There are two families+ one conservative, one liberal. Structurally they're the same, but wildly different in their beliefs. Both families stereotype each other in the worst ways ("That conservative family are a bunch of bigots!" "That liberal family are too sensitive!") But the way they're actually potrayed in the show is more nuanced. Maybe they could even have one kid that's the opposite. Either way, one of the kids from each family start a friendship and actually learn about each other as *people*, not stereotypes. Maybe the families even start to get to know each other as people. Her mother is concerned that her teenage daughter has no interest in sex. Let me rephrase that: Helen is upset because her TEENAGE DAUGHTER wants to be ABSTINENT, and NOT SEXUALLY ACTIVE. What parent in their right mind would WANT their child to be sexually active, which poses the risk of them getting pregnant at a young age or contracting an STD? I'm sorry, I just found that a tad disturbing. I mean, if she doesn't wanna have sex, don't make her have sex! Edit: BTW, I'm not offended by the word "chick". Edit 2: That conclusion kicked ass! @@jstevinik3261 Subsidization requires money and that means either higher taxes or printing money which means inflation, so bad idea. The best way to handle this would be to impoze mandatory fixed interest (no going up the longer it goes unpaid, the amount that needs to be paid back is set in stone one the loan is made just in case it wasn't clear what I meant) for the student loans, the fact that the government is backing them means the risk is as low as it can possibly go for the lenders so there's no reason for them to be charging as much interest as they do. Adding onto that existing loans should be semi grandfathered in, so whatever is still owed becomes fixed and won't keep racking up but accumulated debt doesn't get absolved. Government intervention has also artificially driven up demand for degrees even for those interested in careers where they are absolutely superfluous which is the other half of the reason why the prices have been going up. The lie that university is the only way to success needs to die because it's enabling price gouging and the workforce can't really absorb all the people with useless degrees properly. Not to mention all the indoctrination that occurs in uni, that's what keeps pumping out all these wokescold cultists and was the primary vector for this disease that has destroyed public discourse among other things and threatens to rip society apart, more than it already has.

In one way it’s a brilliant look into the utter hypocrisy of the left, but the satire is so strong that it’s blurs the line between real and parody. It's pretty strange that Mike Judge was able to create two shows that are so wildly different from each other. King of the Hill was a show told through a conservative lens that actually had (and still does to this day have) a funny and smart way of satirizing American culture. Because of that, it managed to stay on the air from 1997 until 2010 and is regarded as one of the best animated sitcoms of all time; The Goode Family, meanwhile, was a show that was more inclined to just mercilessly mock (and yet still expect the audience to root for) liberals and their views on certain topics. Because of that, this show only got 13 episodes and doesn't really have all that much to offer, entertainment nor present-day social commentary-wise. While TGF is indeed terrible, its existence should still serve as an example for how you could go about telling these types of stories incorrectly (the same ones that Judge oftentimes got right with KOTH incidentally enough).

Technically, there are third parties in the U.S., with the three largest right now being the Libertarian, Green and Constitution Parties. With that said, all three of them are dwarfed by the Democrat and Republican Parties, to the point where the only time any of the three got any electoral votes for Presidency was for the Libertarian Party in 1972, and even then, it was only a single vote. I still think the 1977 Doonesbury special has lot of things that The Goode Family lacks. In that special, Doonesbury and his friends were lamenting the end of the peace generation, and the inevitability of their lives changing. The debate between Mark Slackmeyer and BD, the conservative friend who always wore a football helmet, was an interesting demonstration of the divides that still lingered after the Vietnam War. There was one interesting scene where Doonesbury was trying to make sense of the whole peace generation, because that movement had a energy that was never seen again since. Another great scene involved a protest at Walden college where Jerry Thudpucker performed like Bob Dylan, and chaos instantly erupted due to the dean accidentally dropping a flower pot on a armed guard. It did an interesting job referencing the major events that defined the era, and having the characters discuss them humorously in relation to their own lives. Joanie, the middle-aged lady friend of Doonesbury, and a member of his commune, made an interesting observation in that film during BD's and Mark' debate. "You know something, guys. I think you're all missing the point. You don't see how your pasts have affected you, and how they've prevented you from growing. Zonker was right." That line applies to many minds of my generation. It may not be the ultimate Doonesbury adaptation, but it still conveyed its ideas and characters in a way I wish other liberal comedy cartoon would do, particularly the Goode Family.

Okay, so I'm probably jumping the gun a little bit here, with this comment (I'm making it right around the 7:26 mark) but I think I know what the problem with this show is: they took characters that _should_ be side characters, and made them *main* characters. Poking fun at and critiquing an ideology is actually perfectly valid as a tactic? But I think it's *_exceptionally_* difficult to do, when the characters are the main characters, who get the most screen time. I had a similar sort of problem with the Pirates movies, particularly when they wanted to focus exclusively on Captain Jack Sparrow; Jack is a supporting character, and works best in that role. When he is the primary character, he cannot function in that same capacity, at least not to the same degree. As such, all of his flaws become far more prominent, and the story suffers as a result of that. Everything I've seen about these characters suggest they should be relegated to short snippets of a different show. An episode's length dedicated to them, at most. Otherwise you have what likely got the Goode Family canceled: an over-abundance of obnoxious character types that no one on either side of the political spectrum likes.

The dog is suffering in the cartoon because of exaggeration. Dogs CAN be vegan; it's CATS that cannot. Cats are obligate carnivores because they can't produce certain proteins in their bodies. Dogs and humans can produce these proteins, and therefore can be vegan. Some dogs are put on vegan diets to help with health issues, such as kidney problems. The only issue is that you have to tailor the diet VERY carefully to ensure dogs and humans get all the required nutrients. Always discuss pet diets with a vet!

Personally, I think if The Goode Family were remade today, it would be a lot better of a show, as you can definitely have The Goode's be the same characters, while having less radical versions of the left be everyday people, and even throw in some criticisms of the far right. The key to making that show work in the long run, though, is that in a similar nature to King of the Hill, just like how it taught conservatives need to be more accepting of change, The Goode Family could teach liberals that sometimes, if something isn't broke, there's no need to fix it. Dogs have a difficult time breaking down the cellulose in vegetables and fruits, meaning that they won't get the same amount of nutrients from them as they would meat. In short, if you love your dog, give them meat.

@@sageforasennight If meat was ONLY allowed for animals which required it, it wouldn't be so bad. But the ammount of meat produced in the world is WAY more than even human beings can eat. If at least it were used to feed people who are starving it would have a point. But a lot of the meat produced simply goes to waste. Not to mention the horribly barbaric and inhumane way in which animals are treated during their life. It's one thing to give an animal a decent life while it lasts. It's ANOTHER thing to mistreat and lock up animals in a confined space.

@@sageforasennight How is it off topic? It has everything to do with the motivations for being against meat in the first place. Wait a sec...Hum...let's see: 1. Bringing out meaningless arguments? Check. 2. Insulting the other person instead of using logic? Check. 3. Using random words as meaningless insults? Check. 4. Sensitive subject that has real stakes and is likely to make people justifiably angry? Check. Are you an internet troll? Cause your response is giving me plenty of reason to suspect. I've dealt with many internet trolls in the past, and they behave EXACTLY like this. Pulling out meaningless criticisms and not paying attention. If this is the case, now is the time when you're going to attack or insult me calling me "stupid" or "crazy". If you have some ACTUAL argument, then bring it on. But if you don't and your just looking to annoy people online for your own amusement, then give up. I'm not falling for that.

Honestly a lot of the online political sphere comes form letting everything be political. Like cuties isn't political until someone bring up the fact that some people defending it were on the left. Like it wasn't the left it was just werdios who had some left-leaning views. The ohio thing isn't a left/right issue it's just disgusting people trying to show that in a classroom. I think we just need to stop classifying every disagreement into right and left boxes.

The Goode Family is not a very good show but it could have been if it had been done with more finesse like King if the Hill. I think if the Goode family were more moderate and ran into situations and people that were more on the fringe and had to deal with them it would have worked better.

14:12 Something like that actually happened in my country (Czechia). A certain conservative politician picked a fight with another MP during his speech in the parliament because he told him to put on a mask. He had to be taken away by the security guards and he also managed to break the microphone on the lectern in the process. It was a huge meme back in 2020.
