At about 9 minutes in you warn about shoulder collapsing and what not... On the Avastar website they suggest using the IK chain control menu to reduce the IK chain. Select the wrist IK ring (green ring) and in the menu click "less" once.

Hey Medhue, that was a really good intro to character animation tutorial. Thank you very much. I've used Blender for years, just now getting into character animation (I've mostly made spaceships and games), and a lot of this stuff still confuses me. Your tutorial was really helpful. And VERY cool idea to just upload a library of poses! I can't believe I've never heard of anyone doing that before! It's a great idea. So, thank you. I had a question, though: The "Export animation" panel you show, to export BVH: is THAT what comes from getting the Avastar addon? I don't think we have anything like in Blender otherwise. I could see how that would be really helpful!

Sorry, Ghostwriter's Corner. I hope you got a hold of me some other way, as I never saw this comment on the video until now. There is much more to Avastar than just the export animation options. You get the whole rig and avatar, and it matches up with the character in SL. This makes it easier to rig clothing or even whole new avatars, as well as animate them. If you see the other video I did about retargeting bvh files, that is the real animation part that comes with Avastar. It would be much harder to retarget bvh files without it.

Some nifty tricks in dope sheet to move about keyframes MAKE SURE PRESS A 3 TIMES IN 3D VIEW OR WONT WORK. YOU NEED TO HAVE THE WHOLE AMATURE SELECTED. Click dope sheet view, press A twice to deselect. Then: B = box select [enter when done] C + mouse wheel = drag-select [enter when done] G = move selection S = scale selection Ctrl+C = copy keyframe at time cursor Ctrl+V = paste keyframe at time cursor You can do this with multiple keyframes to great effect (so much faster !)

Thanks for getting back so fast! Will using only the SL skeleton/armature restrict the software's possibilities? I also read somewhere the Avistar 2.0 has an animal creation function - is that correct? Sorry for all questions - your tutorials are great and inspiring so keen to purchase and get going.

Avastar2 has the Bento Skeleton, which has a ton more bones that allow you to make almost any creator with the skeleton. It comes with a full set of facial bones, fingers, wing bones, tail bones, and an extra set of limb bones. They can be used in any way you want tho.
@medhue

Like I said, the SL skeleton is similar to any human skeleton, and is so similar, it matches Unity's Humanoid rig.

You don't need to go to preferences to turn on auto keyframing, you just press the red button in the toolbar below to the right of the animation controls..

Great Tutoprial! I have one question though, When using the IK bone structure i notice when imported inworld that everything below the waist moves together rather then say a "weight shift" I havent figured out if there is a lock or unlock setting to allow this movement to be imported and wondered if its an SL restsriction, or something checked or unchecked in blender.

There are both the bvh, and anim formats you can export with Avastar. If you export with bvh, then you will have those options upon uploading them. With anim files, you put that same information in when you export it, not upload it.

May be a silly question but want to check before purchase can I use Avistar to create animations I can render in Blender? I know the software iss designed to create characters for 'Second Life' but have no interest in this.
@medhue
8 жыл бұрын
Yes, but this also means you want to use the SL skeleton/armature, as that is what Avastar is all about. It's a basic skeleton tho, that is somewhat universal. I use many of Avastar's features to make things for other platforms, or for things exclusive to Blender.

Are you planning to do a updated tutorial video with bento?. I am wanting to start learning animation with blender, i have been using qavimator for some time but its limited in what i can do. One thing though, you say press N to and then click the capture button. I can't see that button when i press N, my pop out menu is different to yours
@medhue

n simply opens the side panel. The capture button is just for me to show what keys I'm pressing. That was an add on for blender. Most of the animating parts are the same, with or without bento. I do have a number of bento specific video about animation tho, and I will be doing more.

Sounds like you did something wrong and the animation file isn't right. Make sure you select the skeleton and then use the bvh or anim file export in the Properties window, under the camera symbol.

@medhue

+CaramiaJinx In Blender, there is no such thing as pinning, unless you are pinning a tab, or tool in your tools shelve. In Blender, you would use the IK features. Avastar has an extensive IK set, to move the body like this. I go over it a little in this video.

Is there a way I can preview my static pose BEFORE I upload them to SL ? because Qavimator does that before I pay 10L the reason I ask is because since I have a mesh body the pose is very different in game then what it does in blender and I don't wanna keep paying 10L for every error I get lol
