We start in Solaris by bringing in all of the assets, and layering everything together. All the assets, including the buildings, layout and character, will be provided in the downloads.
Assets are in USD format, with all materials and settings already applied, to ensure a fast and smooth process setting up the scene.
Simulations
First we’re going to simulate the cloth, using vellum. Here we’ll discuss best practices when it comes to simulating fast moving objects.
Then we’ll create the first layer of particles that will act as a wind force that’s around the character. We’ll use various pyro and pop simulations techniques to achieve this effect.
For the second layer we’ll use similar techniques to create particles that are trailing directly off the character.
We’ll also create dust kick back when the character steps on the ground.
Solaris
After we have all our FX, we can go back in Solaris and start rendering. We’ll render the city, atmospheric fog, particles & dust all as individual layers.
In this section we talk about fog, lights, materials, render settings, and generally a lot of things that you need to be aware of when rendering in Solaris.
In case you don’t want to spend time rendering, I’ve included all the renders that I used, so you can jump directly into compositing.
Compositing
We start by splitting up the AOVs and recreating the beauty pass.
I’ll show you different ways that you can dramatically change the entire shot by adjusting the light passes.
Then we’ll layer the atmospheric fog that we setup in Houdini, but
also create additional volumes and godrays directly in Nuke, to emphasis our lighting even more.
Finally we layer our particle FX on top. We’ll do a lot of grading, add displacements and glow, and after some final post processing fx, we complete the comp.
Downloads
You will have all the geometry required included with the downloads. Everything else that I couldn’t include (like megascans texture) you will be able to find by using the links provided in the links.
The download archive also include the completed Houdini project file (ver. 20) and completed Nuke script (ver. 15)
All renders also included.
