Alec, can you do a video on making your own weights ? I have some wt molds I bought years ago. Have never been able to get the lead out of the one mold . I melted the lead into it and now it’s stuck

I can do that. I'm not sure if the video would be a Tech Tip or a Vintage Scuba. I don't know many divers who still make their own weights. Instructions for using a weight mold (I assume yours is the typical aluminum type) suggest spraying them with a release agent - Pam, Olive Oil or a commercial agent like CRC. Even WD40 might help. The clamshell type are better since they pull apart to release the weight but they are usually for bigger weights. I'll see what I can do for a video to help. I also have a cute story about my own weight-making experience when I was about 12 years old. Talk soon. Alec

Good video as usual. But I feel that divers should try moving their cylinder higher slightly and maybe moving a bit of led higher up if possible. They should also know what diving horizontal is like.... can feel strange at first. Then if they still feel they need ankle weights then give them a try. But try other things rather than straight to the ankle weights. thanks....

Good point on female physical differences. Body fat is propotioned differently than in most men and women tend to float up differently. I personally have never needed them, but I have seen many women use them to good effect. Thanks for sharing.

Since you invited us to ask, here is my question: I have the opposite problem, my torso floats and my legs are hanging (I see this problem with the majority of divers both on youtube and in person). There are some weight belts to mount on the chest called "harness", but they are designed for freedivers from what I have seen, and if I want to use them in SCUBA, they cannot be releases easily due to the BCD being over it (maybe if I use them in conjuction with regular weight belts?). Besides wing BCDs, which option do you think is better, a tank weight or these harnesses?

Thanks for mentioning this. I have a lot of trouble filming in shallow water with my legs rising to the surface, I'm talking 1.5 to 3 meters, it's enough effort to keep my body down with out having to kick to keep my legs down. We have a lot of shallow overhangs here in Ulladulla that are great places for cuttle fish, Port Jackson sharks, wobbigongs, turtles, etc. In fact some of my best sightings have been when I am low on air in shallow water on my way back from seeing nothing.

some people don't wait for u to give them ur octo I've seen more times where an individual rips out there buddies mouth piece and I've spoken with several instructors who have said the same thing...now I get if u were doing tec diving u would want 2 second stages but regular open water or spring diving I don't see any issues especially the scuba pro air 2 5th gen it has a predive and dive Venturi switch and the inflator part is a flow control so if u want a lil air just barely push the button..

I just completed a Tech Tip on BCD mounted safe seconds. And on Redundant Air Supplies too. The premise that an out-of-air diver would rip out your mouthpiece is old hat. I was part of that crowd for a while but have seen the results of new training and it just doesn't fly anymore. Once Buddy Breathing was eliminated from training, a new diver will not think about your primary as a source of air for him. If properly deployed, he will much more easily grab your safe second with no risk to you, no gymnastics trying to ascend with the BC reg in your mouth, no worry about a nerw buddy on a dive boat not having practised the use of the BC Safe Second and so on. Save your money. Get a new, slimline octopus, bright, long bright hose and mount it mid chest. And practice with your buddy. Why would he grab your mouthpiece?? You are right about the Air 2 being sophisticated (complicated). I'm sure your OOA buddy will be playing with all those buttons on the way up! Alec

I wanted to add that divers are as susceptible to drama as anyone else. I've heard this comment ".... and I've spoken to many others who say the same thing ..." a lot over the years but I can never find that person nor get details. I have been diving continuously for 58 years and teaching diving for over 40 years, was an Member of the Scuba Diving Accident Reporting Committe for some time and a PADI Advisory Council member as well. Maybe I'm just lucky but I have NEVER experienced an Out Of Air emergency myself or with a student diver. I keep hearing about them but often these stories are more like parables - fiction designed to prove a point. They are not often based on a real event. The next time you hear such a story, ask for names, dates and locations and then watch the person stumble. People don't expect to be questioned so will make up a story to suit their agenda. The next time an instructor suggests that a diver will grab your primary instead of the much more visible and accessible octo, suggest they change their training methods and see what they say. Thanks for watching. Alec

LEAD - MARINE IMPACT! I know lead is harmful, and love the fact you promote coated only lead. But here in Australia, it is still rare, and it is also hard to argue with people when their mentality is "unless you suck on it, it's fine", and "it doesn't leach out into water". I have had trouble finding any Research and supporting evidence on the internet to help convince people here... can anyone help please???
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
6 жыл бұрын
Not sure if I can help. There are lots of laws governing the use of lead - paint, shotgun ammo, plumbing, food utensils, etc. I don't know if there's any legislation in scuba about it. The danger from lead was first discovered, in modern times anyway, from lead poisoning in people who ate food kept in tin cans. The seam and lid in tin cans used to be soldered shut and the solder had lead. The lead must have "leached out' of the soldered seams into the food contents for it to poison people. Maybe there's a place to look. Good luck. Alec

Hi Alec. I love your videos. In Sweden most of us are diving drysuit no matter if its ”tropical” 20 degrees in the water or if its 4 degrees or colder (or even ice). Personally I would go for some heavier rubber fins such as Scubapro jetfins or simular, instead of using ancle weights. Just my personal opinion after less than 3 years of scubadiving. Dive safe! // Joakim from Sweden

With Jet fins or another heavy rubber fin, the need for ankle weights is less likely. You don't get 20 degree water in Sweden!! Sweden is like Canada - cold, icy and good hockey players. Take care. Alec

Hi Alec, thank you for all the knowledge you share with us. It's truly priceless. Quick question. While some people having "floating feet", it seems like I have an opposite issue. My legs have a tendency to go down even with BCD's trim pockets full of weight. I have to move constantly to maintain horisontal attitude, and if I stop, my legs are always goes down. Is there an opposite solution? Something like ankle floats or something?
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter

I've never heard of ankle floats but maybe you could try a new pair of neoprene dive boots. Try to find a pair that does NOT have the big, heavy molded soles like a running shoe. And a full 6.6 or 7mm style too. That might give you added buoyancy. And maybe lightweight fins. Even floaters. Alec

I am glad I saw this video before buying a weight belt. I bought a wetsuit so I can swim in my pool until it freezes. I put on the suit and my head was going under water. I like to swim with my feet low. It keeps the noise down so that the neighbor kids don't know I have a pool. The ankle weights will probably do what I need. Good video :D

Hi Alec. I find your tech tips videos very educational and entertaining. Question on placement of ankle weights when using a dry suit. I assume they would be placed just above the boot top if you want to use them to restrict air from migrating to your feet as well as the added weight benefit. Placed down at the actual ankle means you would have to compress the boot which seems not likely to stop air migration to the feet. Found myself in the up side down position on one occasion. Very stressful. Luckily I was in shallow water but felt a bit unnerved just the same. Think I might give them a try.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter

Ankle weight are just to bring down floaty feet, not to restrict air in the dry suit. Start with light weights and test dive them before adding more to the ankles. Some divers add too much weight then fin more to compensate.

Does using ankle weights make it harder to kick in the water? or does that only apply to the heavier fins?
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
6 жыл бұрын
They do add to the weight that must be moved through the water. However being on the end of a long leg it doesn't seem to be a big problem. It's a compromise. You need to keep you feet down in the water to fin so you need the extra weight. Ankle weights should only be 1/2 pound each or so. You don't need much. Take care. Alec

Safe, cheap and easy. Sounds like a dream come true! 1. Get lead - we used to get lead from plumbers in the old days as they replaced old plumbing with new. I can't believe there's much left out there. Tire stores have old lead from wheel weights and there are other sources too. 2. Melt the lead - I used one of my mom's pots in the beginning but that didn't last long - she saw me! You'll need a good propane burner and a strong pot that's not too big - maybe 2 quarts. 3. Pour into molds - you can buy scuba weight molds pretty cheaply on eBay. I have a bunch for sale. My first mold was just little pieces of wood cut to the right size and shape and nailed to my dad's wooden workbench. I had to make a new mold for every weight poured but it was cheap and worked great until my dad saw me burning his bench! Funny how moms and dads are alike that way!! 4. Be careful - molten lead burns like heck, you and anything else and the fumes are quite dangerous. Do it outdoors and wear a mask. Good luck. Alec

Ankle weight - I got some from previous owner and almost used them on my first few drysuit dives (got caught going up too fast not able to dump at shoulder fast enough, and sure enough to turn back down to kick and get depth again and your feet balloon very quickly. But it was easy to flip back up IMO. after the 3rd dive I figured I needed to orient myself ahead of time and dump air before I start going up, then air expanding naturally moves to your shoulder for further dumping. Don't think I'll ever need ankle weight now...

Right on Alain. I too learned to empty my dry suit BEFORE an ascent and rely on my BC for buoyacy control. Simply easier and safer than trying to balance the two. Alec
@alaind831

I don't use the BCD at all, as long as I dump some drysuit air before I ascend, then I'm oriented the right way and the auto-release valve makes it easier to dump as I go up instead of dealing with a BCD. It's automatic!

Would I be able to strap those around my shoulders? because I found that I have the opposite problem my legs sink like rocks making it difficult to stay horizontal.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter

Try putting them around the top of the tank - up by the valve. That might work although it could cause you to tip backwards. Maybe one around each shoulder strap of your BCD. That's high enough and on the front. It should keep your head down and facing the right way too. It's one of those trial and error things. Good luck. Let me know how you make out. Alec

Hi Alec, thanks for the tip. I put the ankle weights around the shoulder straps and my trim was so much better. The difference was night and day and such a simple fix. My only concern is that someone who ran a dive charter in the carribbean said that he would not allow any divers to wear any non-dumpable weights. You could argue that I CAN dump them simply by unbuckling them since I can obviously reach my shoulders (probably easier than reaching my ankles), but I don't suppose an argument with captain on a weeklong liveaboard would be worth it. What are your thoughts on the issue, or have you heard of dive companies not allowing this sort of weight setup? Thanks again for all your help.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
7 жыл бұрын
Generally a dive shop, charter boat will not impose it's personal, arbitrary rules on their customers unless there's an obvious breach of standards or a clear safety violation. Having a rule that all weights must be ditchable is a problem since many big brand BCDs now have non-dumpable weight pockets. Not sure how they handle those. And having a couple of 1.5 pound ankle weights on your BCD straps is nothing. First, they are quickly dumpable as you say and second, in the overall BCD/weight system, they are nothing. The regulator weighs more than that!!. Glad it's working for you. As I often say, each diver is different. There is no universal system that suits everyone (don't care what GUE says!). Practice and play until you find what's best for you. Alec

Great video, Alec. One question, I have a back inflate bcd which I love when diving. however, at the surface it tends to want to push my face into the water due to the position of the air bladder. Do you think ankle weights would help correct this issue? Thanks.

Joshua Wade hi, I gave up on using a back inflate and switched to a side inflate. It feels a lot safer on the surface and it makes things like putting on fins and stuffing about with your mask a lot easier. I really hated the way i was always having to keep myself upright, the only way I could do it was lean on my back.

Back inflate BCDs would be a good episode. I've heard that they don't push you down if weighted correctly, but have never seen how that should be.

they seem to be good if you balance yourself and stay balanced. my old one didn't have trim pockets just side weight integrated. Maybe trim adjustment would make a difference.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
8 жыл бұрын
I don't think ankle weights would help much for adjusting the BCD attitude. It's worth a try. To correct for the natural problem of wing BCs pushing you forward, you must use trim weights. These are small, 2 or 3 pound weights that are mounted close to the tank at your back. They are usually attached somehow to the tank band right behind your back, close to the tank. Some BCs come with pockets there for that purpose. If yours doesn't, you can get small weight pockets that attacch to your tank band. Start with 2 pound weights, one on each side and see if that helps. Basically you're adding weight to the back to pull you upright in the water. Properly trimmed, and it can take several tries, you should float upright in a wing BC, just like a jacket-type. Alec
