Being home to militarymen, the old Jhelum District encompassed the current districts of Jhelum, Chakwal, and Rawalpindi.
Jhelum has been feeder area to the British Army and to Pakistan Army after partition, having produced generals of outstanding calibre; among these are Gen Jagjit Singh Arora ( Kala Gujran),Gen Asif Nawaz ( Chakri Rajgan), Rear Admiral, Ahmed Kemal and the Airforce Chief, Air Marshal Zafar Chaudhry, besides many other renowned generals, officers and indeed outstanding soldiers.
It has to its credit two Indian Prime Ministers of recent times: Inder Kumar Gujral and Manmohan Singh, while in the realm of art and culture, the rugged terrain has produced some towering personalities that adorned the Bollywood screen or excelled in music and poetry. Thus, names like Sunil Dutt, Gulzar Sb and the talented musician, Madan Mohan have been household names to quote a few - all tracing their roots to Jhelum.
In the pictures above, Sunil Dutt during his visit to Jhelum in March/ April, 1998, stayed at Pakistan Tobacco Company's guest house at its Jhelum Factory. With him is the then management Team led by its Factory Manager, Zaheeruddin Ahmed, a career management professional and one of our mentors , Mahboob ahmed, Athar Sultan and Arif Bilal to name a few besides other Team members.
Sunil Dutt, born Balraj Dutt, husband of the legendary movie doyen, Nargis Dutt and father of Sanjay Dutt of 'Munna Bhai' fame was a celebrated actor and a Minister in Manmohan Singh Government having been elected to Lok Sabha.
In Jhelum, Sunil Dutt visited his birthplace in village Khurd and met his childhood friends who too stayed with him in PTC guest house to reminsce the past.
Sunil Dutt's father, Diwan Ragunath Dutt died when Sunil Dutt was just five years old. He was a landlord. Sunil Dutt was eighteen years old at the time of partition and relocated to India, settling in village Mandauli on the bank of Yamuna river in Indian Punjab.
Sunil Dutt shot to stardom in the 1957 film he co-starred with Nargis, his to be wife, as her short-tempered, angry son and had many more successful movies to his credit.
Sunil Dutt passed away on 25th May, 2005.
