Property Description
While built on a grand scale with high ceilings, exquisite mouldings, and 8 magnificent fireplaces, this remarkable home is a blend of elegance and comfort. The brilliance of the home is in the detail, meticulously restored with great care and authenticity to surpass the original grandeur. Gracefully set on 1.89 acres, the estate combines the height of Arts & Crafts design with strong Iberian Moorish influence. The ironwork of the entry canopy, wrought iron details and coved entry hint at what lies ahead. From entering the cross-vaulted foyer with Mackintosh-inspired balusters, to the magnificent gardens inspired by the Generlife garden at the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, one immediately recognizes the significance of this property. The home’s rich history, coupled with its incomparable livability make this a place to behold.
Noted as a brilliant plan in its spatial organization, a central axis connects the interior of the home to the exterior gardens and grounds. The spectacularly conceived 2 million dollar garden is centered on two levels with long rectangular pools linked by a channel spilling over a small waterfall and flowing gently under a bridge to the second basin. A pathway between the two pools lead from Shaw’s elaborate gated archway to a strolling garden with green, white and blue plantings. The garden was on tour for the Garden Club of America Annual Meeting in 1919 and was featured in the 1933 Garden Club of America Annual Meeting Book. Herbert Croley of The Architectural Record said the house is "A truly American Design".
