Enjoyed the 'film' as always. Glad you enjoyed the show, the technology improves constantly. Curious what safety training they include in the tankless dive system (eg never hold your breath !). You can still get into trouble at 15 or 30ft. Maybe get a dive computer to track your nitrogen status if you will be using it multiple times per day (no diving 24 hours before a flight).

That Bluewater Yacht is pure gorgeousness. Did Hylas go out of business and Bluewater take over though? What's the deal with it being a modified Hylas hull?
@svfairisle
10 ай бұрын
No Hylas are very much still in business and making very nice yachts. But they have gone the way of almost all the other modern boats and changed the hull shape to give more volume inside - massive cockpit - large aft cabin etc. All very well for weekend sailors and marina queens but personally not what I would pick to cruise in. Kyle bought the mold for the hull and is keeping the old style going (and improving on it) which I think is a very good thing. Now someone just needs to do the same with Hallberg Rassy and Oyster!

@@judyaslett6209 Very much in agreement with you on that. Hoping for the day when power assist bikes are as easy and reliable to rent as cars. In Manhattan, where we live, the main bike share system is expensive, poorly maintained, (btw one-size doesn’t fit all) and often unavailable. Not to mention the biking infrastructure is very dodgy in spots and generally not for the feint of heart. We keep bikes in our apt but it’s a pita and a heavy ebike is simply a no go for space, elevator access and conforming to fire codes. New condo/coop lease riders are restricting if not outright banning ebikes from high density multifamily dwellings.

About Hydrovane I'll give you my twopence for what's worth. I've followed the first two GGR (Golden Globe race) organized by McIntyre. In both races, apart from the boats who capsized, the major cause for retiring from the race on the part of many boats was the windvane failure. As you can imagine navigating nonstop for more than one year and crossing storming oceans was a very hard work for the windvanes of the fleet, and a test of its strength and functionality. Hydrovane was clearly the winner, even if one or two of this brand had some mechanical breakage (easily reparired if you had the spare parts) the majority arrived to the finish line in perfect form. Quite an accomplishment.
@svfairisle
Жыл бұрын
Yes don’t worry I’ve talked to Don and also Jean-Luc. As you say Hydrovanes performed very well indeed. Jean-Luc replaced the locking pin with a bolt thinking it would be more secure, it broke quite quickly! He then put back the original pin and it lasted the rest of the way around the world. In the latest edition the only failure was from drilling another hole through the main shaft for a second retaining pin. This weakened the shaft and it broke in sever weather. Moral of the story, don’t mess with it!

Anyone else notice how high the toilet was off the floor on that yacht 😮
@svfairisle
Жыл бұрын
You’ll find that most ocean going yachts (well maybe not the new ones that call themselves oceangoing but aren’t really!) have the head fairly high. That’s because they sit in the water not on it. This means if the head is mounted on the sole there’s a long way to pump the waste up and over the anti siphon which causes problems. Fair Isle is the same.

A paean to conspicuous wealth......
@danielboughton3624
Жыл бұрын
Most basic houses in this area and surrounding states cost more than the boats by a bit. The cost of living is also high. You could sell your house locally and buy a used version of one of these and come out ahead and then go find a place to anchor that is cheaper. For the 40' range of monohull you could sell your small low end condo and do the same. That said most people are looking just to see what the new thing is and at least some of those buying were forming a partnership with several other parties to buy the boat. There are not many of the high end boats built per year. For sure few if any of the attendees were conspicuously wealthy. Certainly none that I saw. If you were that wealthy why would you go rub elbows with the common folk?

I'm interested why would you pick the Hylas over the Bluewater?
@briandale8386
Жыл бұрын
@@svfairisle it just seemed more elegant. A classic design that never changed much . Even tho it was a new design it still had the old flavor from 2018 or 19 . And it was the first boat I drooled over . They remind me of a Tayana55 but with a proper interior design. Something Tayana lacked by letting customers pick and choose everything. None are the same . I think another example would be the amels a proper design growing over years . I’d like to see the Hylas 57 with the darker finish on the interior. The cream of the crop for me was a video called Hylas 54 sailing Yacht walkthrough 600 grand . Gratitude, Denison yachting .
@svfairisle
Жыл бұрын
@@briandale8386 Well interior fit out is a very personal choice I suppose but don’t forget the sailing! The main reason I think the Bluewater is a different class to the updated Hylas is that it’s retained a proper hull shape. For me the Hylas has sold out (along with the vast majority of monohulls) into having the beam go too far back to give more interior space and a large cockpit at the expense of open sea handling. You need twin rudders to steer the new Hylas something I personally would never consider having on a Bluewater boat
@briandale8386
11 ай бұрын
Can’t you get a Hylas h 48 that’s the typical single skeg hung rudder . I think a Dixon design . Or a 60 that’s a single skeg hung rudder design by Freers right now that’s new . Maybe he changed the design to a twin rudder 2019 . Seems harsh calling them a sell out after all the hard work people have put into the brand Hylas . Bluewater should try and use the name Tayana . Meaning Belongs to the ocean. If thats the grift your going for .
@svfairisle
11 ай бұрын
@@briandale8386 Yes would have loved to have seen the 48 but they only had the 56 at the show. No surprise really as that’s what this is all about. The modern design look great at a show, you don’t see what’s under the water just the lovely spacious interior. I’m certain this is what’s driving this worrying trend in boat design, they just sell well. And I’m sorry but although I don’t doubt the effort put in, I think ‘sell out’ is exactly the right term for that!

Interesting, we have a patron with a Vagabond I will ask him. Must be some sort of magic going on there I've never been on any full keel boat where you get even an ounce of steerage from the rudder going astern (unless you're going stupid speeds) I can turn Fair Isle rudder through full lock and it wont make the slightest difference to how we track in reverse. Doesn't matter of course there are many other ways of maneuvering a full keeled boat and we manage to get in the tightest of spots with no bother, but having a reversing prop is key to that which was the point of the discussion.

Steve, c'Mon man these are all gadgets, no real sailors. Your vessel is so superior. With all due respect to the excited Bluewater owner, that is a boring interior of gadgets and makeshift for the rich.
@svfairisle
Жыл бұрын
I disagree, the Bluewater is without doubt the closest thing to a an HC for a solid wood interior that I’ve seen. It even has wood lining the inside of the hull like Fair Isle for insulation & no condensation. It’s cedar not teak but teak is just too precious to use in that way now. And we didn’t show it there because we showed a Hylas last week that has the same set up, but the engine access is superb, I think that island galley area is genius. Don’t worry I’m still happy with Fair Isle and wouldn’t swap her but that’s for other reasons, there ARE other boats that can match the quality interior. Makes you wonder why all the other expensive new boats think it’s okay to chuck a load of IKEA furniture in theirs!
