Very true! The real Annie Sullivan had to deal with Helen like this when she was only 7 yrs old (compared to Patty Duke, who was about 15 or 16 when they filmed this scene), although seeing it with a teenager in the role just shows you how much worse Annie would've had it if she hadn't started working with Helen until she was a teen. Nonetheless I agree with everyone that this is a great scene and definitely shows why Bancroft & Duke won their Oscars that year as well.

Buon viaggio altrove!

Oh my goodness. Bette Davis was crazy to think her portrayal of Baby Jane Hudson would win her an Oscar. Though Bette was amazing in her own right, Anne Bancroft gave a topnotch performance in "The Miracle Worker."

What incredible performances by both actresses. I can’t imagine that was easy for either of them mentally or physically, but they made it look so natural. The trust they put in each other to create this performance is incredible. They both steal the scene while letting the other work her magic. Absolutely brilliant and gut wrenching.

No other Movie about Helen Keller compares to this one with Patty Duke and Anne Bankroft. No other remake holds A candle to these two performances and portrayals of these wonder women.

Although I know this is a somber film I can't help but to laugh at how strong willed Helen Keller must've been in real life. Everytime she sat her in the chair there she goes again! I'd have tied her apron to the back of it and gone back to eating till she calmed down! Lol Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke did amazing performances. RIP Patty Duke! You were born to be a star! 🌟

Without a doubt . . . this performance by Anne Bancroft is the most deserved win of the Best Actress Oscar . . . ever! (People always point to Vivien Leigh in GWTW and Streetcar - but both of those performances are still not as good as this)!

Definitely much better than any recreations. The girl playing Helen did a great job, and Anne Bancroft definitely expressed well a sternness but kindness to the child. This scene was great though, quite comical in it's effect.

Patty also won an Emmy for playing Annie Sullivan in the television production of " The Miracle Worker ". However you are incorrect about Ms. Duke's People Choice Award. She won that award for her return to television series " It Takes Two ". The award she won for " Me Natalie " was the Golden Globe Award. In fact it was her second Golden Globe Award. 1 Oscar, 3 Emmys, and 2 Golden Globe Awards. A very distinguished career.

@@katherinebooth1708 erm, no. *at the time* patty, at 15, in 1963, was the youngest person to get an oscar. She was “superseded” by Anna Paquin in 1994, who won at 11 years old. They were both “superseded” by Tatum O’Neal, who won at 10 in 1974, and still holds the record for youngest winner.
