Wow - what an eye opening video - I appreciate that you are making all of this knowledge public - the glass artists are benefiting greatly !

I don't even know why it crossed my mind but I always wondered why it was so important for glass to be annealed, and I never had a chance to see the effects of non-annealed glass- nor the camera that could actually show it! Here's hoping this gets pushed unexpectedly by the algorithm

My memory assisting glass artists, was to sit on a stool long distance from huge bolt of molten glass. Not blowing. Keeping the centre of the thing oxygenated. The monks and nuns would cut the pieces and parts. There were also flattening plates. And cast iron castings. I was sweeper.

Corning glass stress introduced by glassblowing process and annealing release the stress well explained. Wonderful demo.

Can you hear if glass has been annealed properly? I don't know if it's just me but I bought 3 glass pieces recently and they have a "brittle" sound when they tap something hard. One of the pieces already had a hole in it from a bubble from the glass being too thin. It just doesn't sound like other annealed pieces of glass I have.

Hi there, I'm new to glass works and just wondering I've just casted a small block of glass,(about 3 x 4 cm) and I don't know exactly what type of glass it is (but its melting point was low, definetly below 1000 deg c, it was the kind of glass balls which you can buy in the dollar store for bedding your aquarium), how do I anneal it? or does annealing required for such a small block of glass? Thanks very much.

Wao..that's nice and it has given me a clear pic about the annealing process...Thx ya..

How does the device able to see stress in glass?

The polarizing filters control the way the light waves hit the glass. The stress in the glass bends and refracts the polarized light and creates colors we can see. By comparing the different colors we can see areas of higher and lower stress.

I thought boro(Pyrex,COE33,etc.),didn't require annealing?
@corningmuseumofglass

+Bowtie41 That is a common mis-conception. Thickness dictates the need for annealing, even with borosilicate. But with borosilicates, the glass expands and contracts about 1/3 as much as a common soda lime, and therefore you can get away with much less annealing, or with no annealing if the piece isn't cooled to quickly or is flame annealed. Shape also plays a part. Rounded shapes - such as marbles or beads - are stronger and can tolerate stress more than angular shapes or things which vary from thick to thin. Hollow forms of course require little to no annealing when compared to the same shape made solid.
