"Smooche de la rooche II was concieved as a collaboration between myself and a Canadian artist and dear friend of mine, Hazel Meyer; a planned performance art and music installation focused on the integration of athletics, electronics, music and art. Due to the immense body of water which divided us we decided to proceed in separate explorations of the same theme - beginning with Meyer's installation smooche de la rooche and concluding with this piece, both combining skipping with electronic mediums and creating an aural articulation of beat-based corporeality through a demonstration of physical endurance.
Smooche de la rooche II demands the musicians to present themselves as athletes. The vulnerability of this presentation - public presentation of an artist outside their medium of expertise, the immanent risk of failure, the open display of competition through a network of games played with both ropes and sounds - create an electric performance that feeds off of spontaneous reactions of the musician/athletes to their ears, legs and arms, and the bodies and sounds that surround them.
Based on the evanescent heart beat and expanded upon by the schoolyard activity of jump rope, the smooche de la rooche pieces challenge commonly held (mis)conceptions and experiences that surround body-based artistic, athletic and electronic/music performances by suggesting an interdependence between the three. Emphasis is made on themes inspired by the world of the athlete such as endurance, virtuosity, competition, and moment-based reactionary processes - factors that also play a role in the world of music. By blurring the distinctions and intentions between artist and athlete, the performance challenges the associations we have and instigate a questioning of what we consider to be appropriate musical and artistic material. Smooche de la rooche (II) softens the boundaries between two (often conflicting) realms of entertainment - culture and sports - and suggests a point of interconnectivity that threatens their relative cultural isolation."
