On this day in 1959 {March 27th} Annette performed "Tall Paul" on the Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand'... Two months earlier on January 5th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #7 and spent 15 weeks on the Top 100... Between 1959 and 1961 she had ten Top 100 records; with this one being her highest charted hit, she had one other Top 10 success {"O Dio Mio" reached #10 in 1960}... R.I.P. Mr. Clark {1929 - 2012} and may God bless Ms. Funicello...

Sounds like the kind of person you would want to have for a friend. I know I would've. I wish I could have had the opportunity to have actually met her.

Great! Please post the video of her singing "Tall Paul" where she has a very tall guy in a school letter jacket that stands more than a foot taller than her. It's from one of the Dick Clark programs.

Notice Dick's white buckskins! Did anyone see the actual 'video' (that's just wrong to say that!) that Annette had with her alongside a picket fence with Paul written in chalk on it?

Yes! It's impossible to find now! I remember the first time I saw it was as a clip in the Sherman Brothers documentary "The Boys".

Did they refer to Annette Funicello simply as "Annette" in the 50s? Why, to hide her ethnicity? BTW, who devised the puppet bit? And how did they get Dick Clark to go along with it?

To answer the first part, yes. Even though she's as white as can be (Italians can be white Ariana), back in the 1950s and prior, if you had a vaguely "ethnic" sounding name, you barely got any work in Hollywood and when you did, it would be the typecast roles for non-whites. Many actors and singers did this. Martin Sheen, Charlie Sheen's father, his last name is actually Estevez and he's also Emilio Estevez's father. But because he started out acting in the 1950s, he changed his last name to sound "white" to avoid being typecast, and getting more work. People like to pretend that Hollywood is this bastion of eutopian liberalism, or that it is now compared to the more "overtly racist" 1920s - 1959, but the reality is that they're not, and never have been. They might be liberal to Republicans and alt-right wackjobs, but it's just White Liberalism or White Moderate, which means they agree that racism is bad "in theory". They'll act like you hurt their feelings because you called them homophobic or a TERF (even though they coined that term themselves)... but really, they're just better at hiding their bigotry than their conservative peers. They're still bedfellows, make no mistake.
