The movie was so haunting and I would actually wake up in the middle of the night thinking about it, so I really want to get the book.

"Silence creates its own violence" Reading this book was super weird. It was interesting to see how the 12th expedition members unraveled. Enjoyed it very much. Interesting how they changed much from the book in the movie.

"Some questions will ruin you if you are denied the answers long enough." I just finished the audiobook yesterday. That's the quote that stuck with me. :)

Free floating it's great, but in the context of a (scientist) narrator who is using that rational to actively suppress their own curiosity it's truly amazing.

Annihilation is hands down my favorite book (the movie is pretty cool too). I went into the book blind but it floored me in the most perfect way. To be fair it fits my personal taste almost exactly and the themes of self destruction really stuck with me. Trying to get my mom to read it but I agree the additional context would help most people so I need to give her a little crash course first

i think my favorite part of the book was the pieces of the main character and her husbands relationship we got to see, the grief and her regrets that we got to see are absolutely heartbreaking for me. i think the overall discussions of grief were so meaningful to me and i think it’s a new favorite of mine.

So I think I had a hiccup like your mother reading the novel but also when I watched the film. The first experience I had with annihilation was the film and I came out of it completely enthralled with the world building and lost on the ending. I think it was because I was expecting an alien horror action flick and not a introspective piece on self-destruction. I tried to read the book expecting this alien horror action idea again and I think the impersonal-ness that you mentioned stopped me from finishing it. Couple years later, I saw a video explaining the ending of the film and explored the metaphor and introspectiveness of the film with regards to self-destruction, which made me want to rewatch the film and re read the book. So much more appreciation for them both now, and I agree 100% that it’s easier to come into this novel with an idea about what it’s supposed to be. I’ve also come to appreciate “weird fiction” which is a subject VanderMeer and his wife Anne VanderMeer have written about together, and I think that has helped with appreciating this piece. You have to read it being ok that you’ll never get a clear description of the marsh monster or how the river dolphins have human eyes or what the Crawler is. The description of the Crawler touches on another subject that’s generally hard to capture in either film or novel which is cosmic horror. All around such an interesting book, but I agree that the background and description we get for the characters from the film really help to ground the characters in the novel.

i'm on chapter 5 and looking at reviews now after going in completely blind. i heard about the book on the yellowjackets subreddit and it seemed related and like something i would be into. its very odd because usually i don't like audiobooks but i prefer listening to this book instead of reading it. the narrator has a very hypnotizing voice that goes along really well with the novel. physically reading it has been much more tiring and i wanted motivation to continue. i think i will finish it now (even though i might as well have anyway, its really short)

its my favorite movie and i still dont know why. i have seen so many movies both good and bad and review them myself after i see them and Annihilation is still my favorite movie. the themes of self reflection and self destruction and what is evil as well as the beautiful scenes and scifi concepts. anyways, i am trying to get back into reading books now that my school semester is almost over. i thought this book would be good to start with and watched your review. it was a great review and i just ordered the book!

I had watched Folding Ideas video on pop-analysis of the movie and so I had to read the book first because I like to do the book then the movie. I didn’t realize how insane it was going to be and I was enraptured from start to finish.

It's interesting to hear your take on this book; it seems to be a very polarising series, I am unfortunately on the dislike side. Having gone into this series completely blind I was extremely disappointed as Vandermeer seems to dangle this carrot of an unknown place full of mysteries in the face of Sci Fi lovers but in fact seldom actually addresses any of them, rather just unfolding evermore questions that go unanswered. When he does decide to provide an answer it is so cryptic and convoluted you can't be sure if it's actually an answer at all or just another deeper question. It seems this book is more about interpretation than explanation; as a Biology major who likes to understand the inner workings of anomalies I found this unsatisfying to say the least. However, I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with the book, it fufills it's genre of 'weird fiction' well. I just don't believe it is clear enough from the cover/blurb that this is the category it falls into and subsequently leads to poor reviews due to engaging with the wrong audience. I think your recommendations for researching as much context as possible before reading the book is crucial to avoid disappointment.

I literally just finished A Crash of Fate by Zoraida Cordova, and was just about to jump into another Star Wars book. My library has Annihilation available now, so I will definitely check it out! The movie was intense.

What does it mean that Brian Laundrie was reading this book? He drew a picture of a bird and a woman bleeding. Is that what's in the book? Gabby is still missing. Now Brian has gone on the run. He has said he hears voices. Would this book negatively influence a mentally ill person?

I'm very mentally ill and found this book boring and overintellectualised. You can't blame anyone or anything for someone's actions/violence.
