This annual springtime event is sponsored by NASA and Adams State University. Regional college students learn about the science of Mars Rover robotics while building their own rover and competing in a small challenge course. According to Brian Sanders, organizer of the annual event, the annual challenge is "designed to further robot development, and challenge teams to learn about electronics, programming and operating in a difficult environment. Our site, at the Great Sand Dunes National Park, is an excellent location for a simulated Mars mission. The terrain near the sand dunes creates an environment similar to what can be found on Mars." While the Great Sand Dunes are a wilderness area where mechanized equipment is prohibited, the event is held on the close side of Medano Creek, outside the wilderness boundary. NASA scientists study Great Sand Dunes because they are most similar to the dunes on Mars.
