After watching many of these videos using impact wrenches and others sorts of things to loosen the anode rod nut, I found a simple breaker bar was enough. Really didn't even have to push hard maybe using an extra long socket helped. Returned my impact wrench to the store without using it.

Good video and well presented. I'm "reluctantly going to do this to my 3 year old hot water tank. The scenarios I've seen, including this one, show room to actually use a snipe. I live in a modular, so my hot water tank is on the main floor (no basement) and paneled in with outside combustion air. The space is just enough to fit a 40 gallon hot water tank inside! I have to remove an access door panel to get to my hot water tank. Removing that anode from my old hot water tank was a Herculean task because of the confined space. The anode was located in such a manner as the snipe would only allow me about a 6 degree or less pull. It was a nightmare! I drenched it with "skunk-piss" then came back a day later. The nightmare continues! The pipe dope was rock solid and the hot water tank was turning! I finally managed to remove it! I was quite shocked to see what was left of the anode and how short it was! The wrong sized anode was installed in the hot water tank! I installed a new one and crossed my fingers. Two years later the old hot water tank sh*t the bed. It was about 10 years old with no maintenance done to it until I moved in.

Great video man. Only thing I would recommend to help ease the process is to use a "cleaning" vinegar which is basically double the strength/acidity and soaking the anode it it pretty helpful too. Tho I would sit there and watch it as you dont want to just walk away from it. As you may walk back to just a hot water heater cap lol.

This rod has lasted me 6 years since I bought this house...the water heater was installed in 1998. It is probably the original anode rod. You are going to spend $25 MINIMUM for a rod from HD or Lowes. No reason to waste money. www.homedepot.com/b/Plumbing-Water-Heaters-Water-Heater-Parts-Water-Heater-Anode-Rods/N-5yc1vZ2fkp6bw

Thank you for this clear and easy to follow video! Just one thing I’m not clear on: when should I open the hot water tap on one faucet? After I shut off cold water supply to the tank or before? Also, should the tap with the hot side open be the closest to the heater or the farthest away? Not sure, so I am asking and taking notes so I can do this correctly. Thanks again, you’re an excellent teacher.
@MrDabrudda

You would open the hot water tap when you are refilling the water heater to purge any air in the tank.

both of my water heaters (rheem and bradford) have the anode rod under the hot water line, not under either of those caps, so I broke the insulation under the caps for no reason. PS its very hard to remove the anode rod both ways

You should consult your owner's manual and find out where the anode rod is.

I cannot remove the old anode but plan to use impact wrench but some say not to use it because of water heater tank glass lining. I don't think I have a choice since I already bought the new rode. I will update and see how it goes. I use 2 feet extension break bar with extension and still no go. What is your opinion on impact wrench?
@MrDabrudda
3 жыл бұрын
I'd try spraying WD-40 on the threads for a few days and let it soak in and try the 3 foot breaker bar. If that fails then turn to the gun. But you could crack your glass lined tank. If you do get it out then apply the PTFE thread sealant to prevent further corrosion.

This water heater is LP gas. If you have an electric water heater then yes, shutoff the power or turn the thermistat to off so the heating element is not on while the tank is empty.

Good instructions! I just went to my garage to ID the valves and anode nut, I find that my WH sits on a 2 ft pedestal, leaving only 20" of clearance to the ceiling! There's no way for me to pull out a 4 ft anode at the top of the WH. I guess the best I can do is drain the tank for sludge and refill.

No, you're ok. They sell segmented, flexible anode rods, 12 inches of anode rod, short chain, another 12 inches of rod, short chain, etc. How do you get the old rigid one out? Break it loose and pull it up as far as it will go. Then wrap duct tape around it right above where it leaves the tank. Then use a hack saw and cut off the top. Then raise it up again and wrap again with the duct tape and saw again. However, there might already be a segmented rod in there so you'll be fine. And the rod may be snapped off, just he nut there, and if there is, you can just install a new one. Or the anode rod might be so old and withered you can easily bend it to get it out. You can also just buy a new regular rigid rod, but with a hacksaw to length, and install that. The only downside of the flexible rods is they cost two or three times what the rigid rods cost.
@daganhaddad

seeing this made me realize I'll have to cut a hole in the floor to get the anode out
@MrDabrudda
2 жыл бұрын
You can buy flexible/segmented anodes which bend. Not sure about your current anode. Might disconnect the water, gas, or electricity supply and drain the tank then tip the water heater slightly to get the anode out and replace it with a segmented anode.

@MrDabrudda
5 жыл бұрын
The hell it doesn't. Let your anode dissolve and then smell the rotten egg stank coming from your faucet. That is bacteria causing that rotten egg smell. It's not just the bacteria but also the Ph of the water and the other corrosive chemicals in water. That's why ships have zinc anodes to prevent rust of the hulls.

And a waste of $20-30 per year. Not to mention waste of metal when there are years of useful anode material left.
