Let me be the first to say thank you for the video. Well done. I have a Bradford White Hydrojet 40 gallon water heater. I suspect the hot inlet is also where my anode rod is. Could it be in a more inconspicuous place, or I should say inconvenient location. Bad enough they have to be replace, but why couldn't they just have a hole dedicated to that rod only is my biggest gripe. You shouldn't have to unsolder the hot inlet to get to the anode rod.

that was my issue too. Mst other videos show it between the hot and cold. I didn't realize with the Bradford it's in the hot water outlet

some manufacturer have a separate entrance just for the anode: like Giant Cascade

No you should not, instead cut the copper higher up and solder in a coupling. Making them use the hot water inlet allows for them to charge 3 times the price of a standard Anode, which is why my next water heater will be another brand if in Canada/US. In Mexico I have roof storage whith a hot and cold tank and solar for 20 plus years.

It's a pretty bad design that you have to de-solder the hot water inlet and re-solder it every time you need to change the anode rod.

cameratest They obviously don’t want people to do this. It prolongs the life of the hot water heater! Such a scam!

That's is why he should have shorten the pipe and add a flex hose like Sharkbite to connect to the anode. The flex hose can easily be disconnected during next replacement.

@@loganparkerproject306 Good point. I installed a dielectric union ($5) on mine to make it simple to disconnect. I also replaced the drain valve to a full port valve. I'm able to inspect my anode with an endoscope when I do my annual tank drain/sediment flush.

There is a critical mistake. Torch flame cannot directly aim at the female adapter after installing onto the rod, the high heat will destroy internal plastic insulation and Teflon thteads sealer. I did it and found this lesson. Be careful.
@Kinixys3

Also a dielectric union is a better idea so you aren't connecting copper directly to iron.

Great job- excellent video- no blabbing, no goofy music, just showing what needs to be done. Perfect. Thank you very much- this helps me prep for the same job on my Bradford White water heater. Question- what do you think of Sharkbite type fittings? Many thanks again.

why don't you just cut the copper, add a male adapter, the use a flex supply line...

That’s what we use here in CA as we have to be safe for earthquakes. Also the hot water heater has to be secured with straps so it won’t fall over rather than free standing.

I would’ve soldered that connection about a foot away from the plastic. And used a brass fitting. And really a flexible or coupler to make the anode replacement super simple.

I’ll always have work with guys like this. You don’t sweat an adapter after it’s tightened. The heat will cause expansion and you’ll have a leak. The dude didn’t even put the heat on the fitting. The flux pulls the solder down to the heat. All Home Depot supplies too. 😂

Thank you so much for your video. I had a Bradford White installed recently with the same type of pipe connection to the water heater nipples. Is there a reason why you must use one piece union and pipe, instead of having a nut type union that you can simply unscrew?

If electric power off at breaker. Don’t turn on again until fixed and all air is removed! No, don’t drain other than maybe open tub faucet, if it is lower than the top of the water heater, to prevent an overflow of 8 ounces of water or so.

Thanks for making this video C Ng. I have the exact same water heater. Some questions: How long was the anode rod in your water heater when you made this video? Did the anode really loosen so easily or did you have to fight with it? The current anode has an even shorter shoulder and a groove in the nipple, none of which features are desirable.

Why not just cut the 3/4” copper and use a coupling it seems much easier
@mroberts566

"Much easier" is a stretch. Obviously you wouldn't have to de-solder anything, but then you're adding a cut and a second solder. I'd say either approach is perfectly fine and super easy.

KIT TSANG supposedly, magnesium is safer since aluminum has been shown to possibly contribute to Alzheimer’s. BUT magnesium anode may cause a bad smell of your water.
@techguy3507
7 ай бұрын
Magnesium is further down the chart on the galvanic series, so it offers better corrosion protection. There are some issues if you have well water with sulphur content, the magnesium can produe sulfure oxide, or dioxide, and put an odor in the water and in those instances, you go with the aluminum.

Imagine all that magnesium from the rod is leaching into your hot water. Maybe they should just make a better glass liner that won’t leak. This is why you should never drink or cook with hot water.
