This video shows what we saw during another amazing evening at the badger hide in the Ribble Valley in the north of England on the 4th August 2011.
This evening we have a massive family treat to be sat in a wildlife observation hide to watch badgers and other species. We can’t say too much about precisely where the badger hide is located, but it is in a rural part of Lancashire in the north of England.
The first thing to notice is that we can see several badger sett entrance holes going underneath a clump of rhododendrons.
We have left out a little food for the badgers - some plain peanuts, and then we have the first wildlife sightings - a pheasant. We can also hear rooks, pigeons, ducks, blackbirds and other birds.
Badgers may come out of any entrance hole; and the first one to emerge comes out of the most distant one - slightly hidden by the trees. You can hear the blackbird making alarm calls as the badger appears.
The badger is nervous at first; so it stops to listen and to sniff the air for danger. It is concerned, so it goes back underground for a while.
After a while, the badger emerges from the sett again. Still nervous, it forages near the sett - probably so it can make a hasty retreat to the safety of the sett if it needs to.
Now another badger can be seen inside the sett as it comes to the entrance. You can see it sniffing the air for danger signs to see if it is safe to emerge into the open. The blackbird makes some more alarm calls. Despite the food being near the sett entrance, the badger is still nervous and retreats back into the sett.
It seems like there are now two badgers in the queue to emerge from the sett. They slowly start to nibble the food.
After a few more minutes, the badger clan have at last started to feed away from the sett in the woodland clearing. At the moment, half a dozen badgers are feeding out in the open.
You can see three badgers carefully snuffling on the floor of the woodland looking for food.
At this point you can hear a motorbike on the sound track - this is about 600 metres away from the badger sett, so the badgers are not concerned by this.
We give them modest amounts of food because it helps them - it also makes it a better experience for us watching them at the badger hide. We don’t overfeed them.
Overall, this has been a fabulous evening of badger watching.
