13 years later I still love this scene and can remember every word of it. 14 years ago I couldn't speak English. I watched this no subtitles in Haymarket in London with my Cinerworld card after a long day at a minimum-wage job.

I watched this while tripping, and it literally washed away 90% of my depression and anxiety. I understood exactly what she was saying to him on every level. And it just clicked.. the only reason I feel negatively about things in life is because I label them negative. I can fall in love with every "sound".

What’s really crazy about tripping is that you realize you’re not hallucinating. You see things for the way they are. You’re finally able to see that you hallucinate in your daily life, by constantly projecting and overlaying reality with your mind by labeling, summarizing, and judging all of reality. Only those who have been here will know.

Because this is a very well documented event, but the US is only focused on the moon landing, so most Americans (and thanks to pop culture probably not only them) have very little knowledge about all other achievements that happened before that, including the first human in space. Imagine if she would describe the history of Spain but for the sake of a "tale" would say that it's a country in Africa. That would just sound stupid, wouldn't it.

To all the people complaining, she is fabricating it to allow John to face his psychosomatic symptoms brought upon by depression. She compares the sound to a symphony purposefully as a way to individually tailor her parable to John's needs. ("He closes his eyes, and goes into his imagination. etc.). Or at least, that was the way I understood it when I saw the film today.

Exactly. The scene right before this he complains to her about a migraine headache and she gives him some pain killers. Then she tells him the story of the cosmonaut falling in love with a sound that at first nearly broke his sanity. To me I feel like she was connecting the pain of the migraine with the incessant tapping and how one could over come one's suffering through inner willpower and imagination.

Everyone's noting that the story isn't true, but... maybe it is. There are small differences between Earth 1 and Earth 2, as we see at the end of the movie... so maybe this is a little hint that *we're* this movie's Earth 2. I'm guessing that's the point.

Today I decided to watch the trailers just to read the comments and see the beauty that other people found in this movie, and just right now I’m thinking that indeed, maybe this is Earth 2 all along, or that in the last scene we were watching Rhoda from Earth 2. Im blown away and needless to say I am watching Another Earth yet again tonight before bed.

I think the scene before it with Purdeep telling her to keep her mind clear and adjust herself and she would have peace of mind is the perfect setup for this scene, as that is basically the message of the story she tells.
