My grandparents had a gambling addiction when they were young. They said that the hotel would give them free rooms and food just so they would come back and spend more money. This addiction is hard to get rid of because unlike alcohol and drugs, gambling is strongly encouraged by the media. Even drinking has some stigma around it, but gambling doesn't have that as much as it should

To his credit that's probably one of the better apologies from a scammer that I've come across. It explains rather than excusing and takes full responsability. He should still face the consequences but credit where credit is due.

I agree. Especially if we compare this to say Logan Paul’s recent apology for Cryptozoo, Logan Paul blames everybody but himself where as this guy only blames himself. Logan Paul doesn’t take any accountability for his own actions that led to the scam because even though he didn’t make any money he is the one that orchestrated the whole situation that allowed this scam to happen in the first place. Where as this guy admits his own actions specifically and his own faults. Obviously not a great dude but I have hope he can redeem himself based on just this apology since it is a pretty good one.

The nail in the NFT coffin for me was when I went to a residential mental health center after a suicidal breakdown. In between group therapy sessions, other patients and I would chat. I expressed confusion about NFTs and a young man told me it was a great opportunity, chance for losses but overall gains trend upwards, blah blah blah. Group therapy started and he opened up right away about a relapse he suffered with gambling the evening before. It was definitely a “looks at the camera like I’m in The Office” situation. I found it ironic. I won’t laugh at anyone in treatment. We were all on our last threads and were overwhelmed by our difficult lives. But damn if that wasn’t a bit obvious.

Seen this story time and again. My old job was working with Compulsive Gamblers and this is a story Ive heard 100s of times just replace Crypto with something like business funds. Sadly, people likely wont get their money back, but what you said is correct: its sad he has this problem but it doesn't wipe accountability. Holding compulsive gamblers accountable is part of their recovery, actually. Odds are the group he mentioned is GA (Gamblers Annonynous) and they are...usually pretty good at helping with that. But, sadly, many cases like this also end in relapse. Something bad happens and they want help in the moment, but after a few days or weeks they fall right back into their old habit once the heat settles down...

This is actually something similar that happened to me. My dad had a horrible gambling addiction. Like so horrible he would steal money from his job and leave me (around 2 or 3 at the time) and my brother (probably from 0-1) in the car and gamble for hours on end. After a lot of messy stuff it ended up in a huge fight that I witnessed and we now have a broken family. Dad finally got the help he needed but honestly it was too late. He can only see us (me, my brother and sister) every second weekend and Nanna (his mother) hates and blames him for everything. I tell ya, gambling is fecking horrible..

I legitimately felt bad when I read that post on twitter… I used to go in his streams all the time and even won a game of Marbles. I still have the screencap. I don’t know him personally but I remember him saying he had some coding experience which got a lot of people into it. Really sad to see. He gave away PCs, Series X, PS5s and actual money. It just goes to show that no matter how rich or happy you think someone is… that we all are fighting our own battles. I’m surprised Charlie never saw him on twitch. He was definitely well known on twitter. Always glad to see your take on things, man. You do a lot more than you might realize. I hope you all are doing ok rn. Cheers💫

I used to work for a company where every manager I met face to face was a gambler. Store managers, regional managers, hell even the companies VP was a gambler. It was all online casinos though. Chumba, lucky land, stake, pullz, and a few others that I can't recall. Some of them were worse than others. But my store manager was the worst. I would watch this guy burn through about 200$ a day gambling. And watching him get big wins got me hooked as well. Gambling addiction is wild. It's the only addiction I'd really call contagious too.

Are we certain he didn't lie about gambling and just hide the money in offshore accounts? This isn't the first time I have heard the " I lost all our money gambling" story. He would have to provide receipts for it to make any sort of sense at all. There was even a story about a husband that caught his wife cheating and used gambling as a front to hide his money discrepancies when he had actually hid the money in accounts elsewhere, then told his wife he lost everything gambling so she divorced him, and he kept all his "gambling losses"

Gambling addictions are incredibly common. 464 million people worldwide suffer from gambling addictions. Like Charlie said, he is still at fault for gambling away all their money, and his addiction does not make this okay, but I really do think he isn’t lying about the gambling problems. Just because some lie about gambling addictions doesn’t mean everyone is, but again, that doesn’t make this situation okay.

For a bit of extra context: this project (Gridcraft) that he scammed people's money out of was originally gonna be a Minecraft server with NFTs and Blockchain garbage but he had to shut it down because Minecraft made a policy against NFTs and crypto in game so in order to not lose the hope (and money) of their supporters, which there was a fair bit of, they said they're making a standalone game, and like every other crypto game, all that came from it was just the concept of a game and never an actual playable game

Honestly yeah that's probably true. Like, scams target people who are too dumb to avoid them, see all the badly spelled scam emails from Nigerian Princes, and then after the first scam that lost them all their savings, they're also desperate. Dumb and desperate is not a good combo. The people who get scammed a second or third time are the ones that didn't learn their lesson. And uh, they're probably not super likely to ever learn that lesson either.

The professor showed us an article on internet scams, with a pie chart from FBI data of scam categories (like social engineering, breaking into insecure servers, etc). A 2% slice was devoted specifically for the Nigerian prince scam. Everything else were broad categories of stuff. Tells you how effective that scam actually was.

If you go on certain platforms people who have them and want to come out about having one get clowed on by comments saying "keep going you're going to hit it big" and such.
