Occupy Muenster is one of the most significant and inspiring protest campsites in operation anywhere. I am certain that like me, most people probably never even heard of Muenster (Munster), Germany.
When I walked out of the train station the day I arrived in the city I had no clue that I was walking into this: "Most bicycle-friendly city in Germany" -- German Motorist & Bicycling Association; "#1 Runner's City" -- Runner's World Magazine; "City of Peace" (the end to the Thirty-Years War was negotiated here; dialogue is the city's mantra; communication, prevention and tolerance are officially promoted & "City of Bright Minds" (approximately 50,000 students live in the city) -- Official Munster City Guide; and in 2004 it received the LivCom-Award for "Most livable city in the world with a population between 200,000 and 750,000".
However, as surprised as I was about the city, I was even more surprised to find a protest campsite in the heart of this wonderland of a city. I lived in their tent for three weeks.
The city is a place where capitalism spins one of its best hands, yet a wide cross section of the people lead marginal lives or sees a bleak future. The ones I lived and worked with and spent most of my time with had made a decision to "get up, stand up". And they are winning their fight, and I committed myself to helping them in any way I can.
They treated me as a valued family member. We all grew together and faced all the many challenges together. We accomplished a lot and certainly evolved so much closer together as family. It was another new beginning for me...
