Limerick City and County Council’s demolition has slowed down and two-thirds of Moyross is now becoming history, and that seems to have been the plan. Residents who were promised a home to return to once regeneration was complete and who left voluntarily are growing older without seeing that pledge honoured. Children promised a social horse project have become adults.
A smaller Moyross is emerging, with the valuable public land on which people’s home once sat destined for others.
Nationally, 82% of Irish people consider housing to be a basic human right, according to a new poll published today by the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC) to mark International Human Rights Day.
“We need to look at housing in Ireland as a right not a commodity,” says IHREC Chief Commissioner Sinéad Gibney.
