You saved me! Just received my brand new large freeze dryer with the oil-free pump. I had already taken the cover off and checked all of the fittings, everything was tight. But the instruction manual said to *only* finger-tighten the JIC fittings. After tightening both ends of the pump hose with my channel locks (and using a black marker to ensure no over-tightening), my 30-minute vacuum test went from 1200mTorr to 375mTorr. Lynda - If you just bought it, I may know what it is. Mine started taking longer and then eventually gave the "Inadequate Vacuum" error. Weeks later they finally came up with a solution that seems to have worked. It has to do with off-gassing from the glues or other substances in the shelving unit. Those gasses cause it to be more difficult to lower the gas pressure in there. The solution was to first run the heater test mode on the shelving (no trays in) for two hours and then turn on the pump as well and run it with the heat and pump on for another 12 hours. You'll want to mention that to them and see what they say. You can test it out on your own by heating the shelves and the pump together to see if you can get the mTorr down under 500. Mine couldn't, yet without the shelving unit in there, the pump could reduce pressure to the 200s mT in about 8 minutes.

@@gaylebailey968 There is a check valve just inside the inlet port of the HR FD vacuum pump that keeps the oil from being sucked into the FD chamber. You will need to remove the L fitting on the inside and take a look at the O ring where it attaches to the chamber. We have 4 of these dryers and three of them had bad o-rings new. Each was a different "ticket" and it appears the techs have no idea why it would be a good idea to start there with such a common problem. Sucking blue water is totally unnecessary if the problem is the L fitting o-ring. I think they just don't know how to put the o-ring in the fitting at the factory. It is dumbfounding. I also think Harvest Right should pay the "tech" owners for doing their work and fixing these things when they are under warranty. It's not like we work for anyone else for a half a day for free figuring out the problems and fixing them.

I appreciate your informative videos and am wondering if you have any advice for me. Yesterday I received a new premier pump to replace my failed oil-free pump. I bought my machine in late 2020. After getting the pump set up I performed a vacuum test. By 20 minutes it was still at the mid 600 mtorr range. It took an hour and 15 minutes to finally get to 500 mtorr. I have cleaned the gasket and door and you can see it has a nice dark ring when the pump is on. The drain valve is new and no water is being sucked up the drain valve pipe. The vacuum hose is also brand new and tight. I also sprayed the carburetor cleaner on the epoxy plug and the pressure didn't change. So, I've pretty much troubleshooted everything they rrcommend, but it is still taking forever to get down to 500 mtorr. Is there anything else you recommend doing? I really appreciate your help. I'm at my wits end with this machine.

Thanks! I'm trying to figure out a vacuum problem that's preventing me from getting below 650-750 mtor when there's food in there. Without food it gets below 500 fine. It's underloaded. I want to take the back panel off but I contacted support first because I don't want them to cancel my warranty or something - only finished 2 batches before I got this issue. Waiting to hear back from them.

That's hilarious. Same situation with me. Just bought it last week, ran the bread run and then two successful loads and now it won't get below 650-750 with food in it. Without food, it hits under 500 mTorr, but takes about 50 minutes to do so. Other users are hitting 500 in 20 minutes or less. Changed ball valve and did silicone self-adhering tape to all of the hose to metal joints, cleaned door seal and aligned door. No change. I've asked Harvest if I can remove the rear and side panel and not void my warranty to check on the remaining 5 potential leak conditions...no answer after 2 days of emails. Terrible customer service. My guess is that a connection has rattled loose within the case.
@kyoshojoe5903
2 жыл бұрын
Also did the "3-hour" test that tech support suggested. It's supposed to hit 200 mTorr within that 3 hours. It got to 243 mTorr in 3 hours (no food, no shelves). Tried running vacuum test after a freeze cycle (-40F) and it was worse. 90 minutes into it, it was still at 600+ mTorr. So cold makes the condition worse, which is counter to my understanding of cold air vs warm air vacuum. Doubt it's the pump because of this. I suspect a fitting attached to the cylinder is shrinking slightly more than the hose connection, causing more leakage. Still waiting on the warranty response.

Try the following: with food in the trays, inside the freeze drier, touch the leaf icon. Turn on the chiller (refrigerator) and bring the temp down to -10 degrees. Turn off chiller and start a normal batch. You can pull a better vacuum when it's cold. Also change your oil with new. Are you using 5.1.16 or 5.2.16?

Do you have a list of parts that make up the vacuum gauge connection? I found a gauge with 1/4" NPT connection, but I am not sure about the other parts you used to get to the 3/4" JIC flare. I believe you connect to the end of the hose, I am considering putting the gauge right on the pump itself. First time use of the Eagle pump and I am not getting below 2400 mTor according to the harvest right front panel. I do not know if my pump is DOA. I checked my fittings and feel they are ok. Because the refringent tubes are encased in foam, I don't know if the chamber is a single or has multiple cooling zones. I would guess it's a single. Do you have any problems with the freeze cycle? If you have a non-contact "laser" thermometer, and remove the trays, press the leaf icon, and start up the cooling system. You can scan the surface for warm or cold spots. I’ve been screwing around with HR for 2 months now and they are insisting it’s a leak despite passing all the tests. I am now waiting on new hoses and ball valve but again I don’t think it’s a leak. It’s still under warranty since under a year. I can look into testing the pump but it also passed the vacuum test. However when we tried the leak test we did not use the freezer function and it wouldn’t go below high 600s low 700s. It seems with food we cannot get the vacuum. Also when I perform the water test as suggested by HR to see the ice pattern we could not achieve the vacuum. What do you suggest I should try first?

@@Philat4800feet Harvest Right had me send it back for repairs they said it is either a Freon Leak or Compressor problem its currently inline waiting for repair i should have it back in a few wks i think they are having huge problems with these Freeze dryers.

Any plus in changing the hose to a copper line like in the ac units

The HR hose incorporates an O-ring with the JIC fitting. Anything else would be a metal to metal JIC fitting. This is much better than their old "garden hose" design. Any hose/tubing that won't leak and can stand the vacuum would be good. Make sure you're out of warranty.

so all the colored water should be in the jar and none drawn into the tube, correct? I put the end into colored water an it drew blue water to the blue water line. Does that mean it is leaking? I expected the blue water in the tube to go above the water in the jar. I'm confused.

If you place a straw in a drink, the water in the straw will be equal to the surface. If you have a slight vacuum leak, it will suck the water all the way into the chamber but stop before it goes that far.

@@Philat4800feet if I put my finger over the straw top, no water enters the straw. When I put in the end of the drain hose into the colored water, colored water raises to the water line. Do I have a leak in the ball valve?
@Philat4800feet

@@Marshalorn5 In this example, you could, but if your ball valve was leaking, it would continue up the tube and not stop at the water line. I would remove the valve and inspect the ball inside and see if it's pitted.

I could not get below 700 mTorr and I sprayed out groove the giant gasket on the door with water and monkeyed with the drain valve and finally decided to change the oil. I drained it and even tipped the pump all the way to make sure I got ALL of the oil out! I added about 450ml of fresh Robinair clear premium VP oil and fired up the vac test and NO DICE! I still could not get much below 700mTorr. I then looked at my brand new oil and it was ALREADY CLOUDY?!? What the heck is going on?!

The first step is to eliminate the pump as the problem. Purchase a 0-30 hg/in vacuum gauge, gauge adapter (1/4" x 1/2"), and a #12 female JIT x 1/2" FPT adapter. The cost should be under $20.00. You should be able to pull 23" of hg. from your pump.

@@Philat4800feet Thank you for clarifying the gauge details. My unit won’t pass the vacuum test but drops to the 100’s during a dry batch run (no trays). This is right after I got the unit back from Harvest Right! Won’t pass vacuum!!! So it will be good to drill into more detail. It almost seems as though the electronics are malfunctioning.

How do you test the valve stem for a leak ? Help me with my large pro 30 days old ,not able to pull 500 mtorr. The drain valve was junk and I replaced it with a brass gas valve Why cant HR use a good valve? My vacuum pump leaks the vacuum out of the machine when I draw a vacuum test and shut it off,.900 to 0 in 5 minutes.. un screw the muffler and feel the suction from the threaded hole Is that normal? Today HR wants me to buy a tube of calk and seal the wires on top of the tank, more work for me taking the sides off. How is HR able to stay in business telling customers to do all the repairs? I don't like it.Will your machine hold a 900 vacuum for a few hours?

When you say valve stem, I'm thinking tire. Is this the welding port (nipple) with the wires?
@rexhavoc2982

@@Philat4800feet No, the valve stem holds the handle on the drain valve and has packing to seal it. HR sure takes there sweet time helping customers, 2 weeks between phone calls and thats me then talking with idiots. The last kid told me, if any candy dust in the cracks of the tray holder I wont reach max vacuum..HR uses 500 torr as a passing test score.
