Just writing to say "Thanks". I've been a science nerd since a kid (50 years ago now) and always understood the "principles" of engines and similar and had general practical knowledge.... I could replace air filters, spark plugs, do an oil change etc. But was never a "motorhead". You make his entertaining enough to hold my interest and explain the smaller details of the "mysteries" of engines clearly enough to make clear what's really happening. You nearly make me want to grap a mower or weed-whacker from the piles on trash days and see if I can get them going, just for fun. Again thanks.

Please keep up the detailed descriptions.. You are definitely helping me understand Small Engines way better and carburetors way better. I have been mechanicing on the side for 30 years and always feared carburetors are messing with him or touching him doing anything with him. In the last 2 weeks you give me a complete confidence on how to take one apart and clean it I'm excited I got an old engine that was on a tiller that a guy made it's a 10 horsepower generator engine that I got running several years ago. But it's been sitting outside with a tarp covered up. I'm going to try and bolt it to the bench here in the next month or two and get it going. Thank you for the detailed understanding on how carburetor works and the idle circuits and Etc. I've never understood how that worked until now.

I've got 2 vocational training on small Engines and I've actually learned a trick or two watching his vids. Some I just plain forgot. No, all the cancers ARE not in Cali because they ban carcinogenic toxins. Cali has the lowest rates of cancers caused by carcinogenice toxins. The states with the most lax carcinogenic laws have the highest rated. Camp Lajune comes to mind with it's polluted water and soil. Both on base and off base. CorpeeRATions only care about profits above costs including lawsuit settlements.

He did a video on that, his trick is to hit the garage sales right when they open as some of the best stuff goes in the first hour or so. Though as apposed to that I got my first snow, which more or less work, at the end of the sale, when the owner pushed everything left to the garbage pile at the curb.

Been kinda binge watching your videos. It's amazing what a throwaway society we live in, people spend money on these things and don't have enough energy or motivation to to do some basic maintenance, then just toss them away when the carb gets plugged. I'm sure they sit around some coffee shop telling anyone who will listen that those Chinese generators are just total crap. The ironic thing is that most of these people buy the generator for emergency power in case of weather, war or zombie apocalypse, but would never get the thing running if needed.

I thought you made a racing generator @33 min. But seriously, I had Generac that served me well for many years. But not without some assache. It was hunting just like that one, so in the interest of time I just bought another carb, but for some reason that carb wouldn't idle down under no load. Anyway, a buddy of mine spotted a problem with some "artificial snot" that was used to seal one of the Welch plugs that had broken down and causing a vacuum leak. Sealed it with some RTV, put the old carb back on, and it was good as new. And yes, it really did look like dried snot. Then it got stolen.

Thanks for doing these videos, down side is if the guys selling these things so cheap discover your site they might keep and fix stuff up themselves rather selling. Let's hope not. I found a 6500 kw generator at a sale, the auction staff couldn't get it started so not much bidding on it. Got it for $80, it looked like new. When I got it home I took the air filter off and squirted some gas in it and it fired right up and still runs great.

Thanks for the great vids.

I don't know much about generators myself but I had a feeling about this one - quite a few electrical folks I've talked to have said is if you want anything decent in that power range you need to invest about 2k, not 500. I was tempted to buy something like a 1 kW set years ago to power tools on remote salvage operations (i.e. houses scheduled to be demolished) but in all honesty I haven't been to one for probably ten years so I wouldn't have used it at all so I'm glad I didn't. Besides, it would have died pretty soon because before watching your videos I knew zero about engines and would have left it sitting with a tank full of fuel just about forever!

Haha those carbs are 13 bucks new on ebay. Gotta love it. You got the generator racket cornered over their. You make it look so easy, one of these days I have to get around to taking that Honeywell inverter generator I found at the curb out of my shed and dig into it. Probably something simple, like a gummed up carb. Those are the engine's that power most minibike's now rato hensim. Descent engine's. All the baja's are powered by them. That's the one you wanna on the minibike, go as fast as you want, you need my governed one same engine, same carb, everything. Sell that engine on ebay, describe it as ungoverned good running mini bike engine. It will go fast for a descent price too.

Good tip for mechanics like yourself. If any friends or family play guitar .Next time they change guitar strings which is usually often.Have them save the clipped ends of the strings and give them to you. They make fantastic carb cleaner poke thru tools.About six inches long in different diameters ranging from .008--.052.depending on gauge of set.The wound strings electric or acoustic have ridges in them great for cleaning carburetor orifices.I work on antique and classic outboards and play guitar so I learned from myself.Just a shared idea ...Glenn in N.Y.

2 months ago a guy wanted me to figure out why his generator wasn't running. I told him it was most likely the carburetor, so he bought a new one and then called me saying it was still running rough. I pulled the air cleaner box off and noticed the front carburetor gasket was blocking a hole on the carburetor. Sure enough he mixed the gaskets up and after I swapped them around it ran great.

Generators are handy but only once a year or so. People buy them and then they go years without being started and that's the worst thing you can do. The gas gets old, the carb gets gummed up with shellac and the exhaust and linkage gets critter nests in them. The big generator sets for hospitals and data centers have a set maintenance schedule and they get run up and tested on a regular basis. If you own a small generator it's best not to neglect it.

From what I've heard on Chinese generators and industrial engines the majority of issues are minor things like fuel leaks or loose-fitting hoses. Almost never do you hear of major mechanical failures. I used to have problems with 2-stroke carburetors getting clogged and the engine running too fast as a result but after cleaning them once the issue never returns. I wouldn't recommend them to people who don't know how to work on things but they are getting better.

A tip. If you want to keep it running for more than a few seconds, put some gasoline in a spray bottle, set it to must. It wink keep running as long as you keep pumping. I like this much better than starting fluid (either) on diesels. Either is capable of blowing up a Diesel engine while a gas spritzer will not.
