I think fighting games being as open ended as they are is what makes them so difficult for people to pick up. At the end of the day the goal is to beat your opponent but the amount of ways in which this can be done is almost endless, so you need a way to constrain all of those possible options and pathways into something manageable, which Brian does get into a little bit when he talks about talking a bigger problem and dividing it into smaller pieces. The problem however is that new players don't neccessarily have the framework of knowledge needed to be able to do this on their own. You can't break a problem down into smaller problems if you don't actually know the constituent elements that make up the bigger problem. So to alleviate this i think it'd be really helpful if skilled players made a "Fighting Game Curriculum" of sorts that gives new players a step by step guide on where to start putting their focus when trying to learn the game and where to move their attention to next once they've sufficiently mastered a previous step. And while there would probably be some disagreement between various high level players where the best place to start is and where to move after every step, in reality i don't think it actually matters that much as long as it just starts somewhere and builds upon itself from where it starts in a fairly intuitive way, similarly to how in school if/when you learn Algebra or something you'd start at Algebra 101, then move to Algebra 102 then 103 etc (or however it is that stuff goes). Two places i can think of to start would be either whatever gives you the most bang for your buck (as in whatever helps newer players Rank up the fastest when it's implemented into their gameplan) or whatever helps build the best foundation or "fundamentals" which might not yield the most results immediately but perhaps creates a more solid framework of knowledge to help build and expand upon. Despite what i said earlier it is of course technically possible to do this mostly by oneself but doing so requires a tremendous amount of self-discipline and intrinsic motivation, which isn't exactly what games usually rely on or teach/foster and is therefore not something most gamers have much of and it is one of the major reasons in my opinion why fighting games still haven't cracked the level of popularity that other online competitive gaming genres have.

Yep, I picked up fighting games relatively recently, started when strive came out. The amount of time it took of intentionally thinking about the game worked to actually get to the point to where I can understand situations intuitively and how to break them down to build out option sets was very high. It was hundreds of hours of playing the game, but more importantly, it was also hundreds of hours thinking about the game and discussing things with knowledge players in discord servers, reading dustloop wiki on game mechanics, etc. It all comes intuitively now, I didn't have to put much time into learning things in sf6 because I already have the fundamentals understood. I basically just had to learn how the game system functions, and then focus on matchups. The hurdle at the beginning was massive and most people are not willing to put in the time to get over it, which is understandable.
@duelme1234

ah, nice seeing someone else framing learning using the concept of "framework". Also not sure how unpopular my opinion is, but I think there are far less "hard games" (that are nigh impossible to get into) than most think and in a lot of cases it's an issue with lack of GOOD learning resources over anything else.

The trick with Ken is to go to the character select and pick Zangief. Then play ranked until you meet another Gief. After this make the funny face in the menu, after this round start taunt, if you then win the match, you will unlock this crazy new menu trick. After this, go back to character select, hold start on Ryu, and press up, down, down, down, down, left, then buy the characters pass, wait until Akuma is added to the game. If you do these steps exactly, you will unlock Akuma.

I hate shotos 3000 times more than I hate zoners or grapplers. Whenever I eat a 270 command throw or something like that, I feel they deserved it. Whenever a zoner manages to escape my pressure after I crossed their minefield, I feel I just screwed up and they did their job right. Whenever I got stuck between a fireball, a shoryuken and a low mid kick into oblivion, I feel equally dumb, bored and unfairly betrayed by the game. Even when I know my shoto oponent is playing well, I still feel they just turned easy mode on.

JP, whose initials we still don't know what they stand for, is a character in SF6 that is used by streamer and professional player "Brain_F", who we don't know what the "F" stands for. It can be whatever we want to be? Just like JP, Brain probably has a lot of different names for the F in different places. Russia? Could be Firs. Italian? Festo. Mexico? Fernando. Japan? Fubuki. Y'see the link here? Brain_"F" would be tons of names, "JP" could be tons of names, too. Brain doesn't roleplay on reddit because it's not optimal, he roleplays in real life because that gives him the extra power he needs. Sooner or later, we will see Brain with Psycho Power. Just wait on it.

Look ma I'm in a brine video! I think I definitely could have worded it better, but the core of what I was trying to ask wasn't how to deal with gimmicks but more so if there's a way to get ahead of them. Like sure I can go in training mode and figure it out after the fact but it doesn't take away the salt of the loss in the moment. I guess it'd just be nice if there was a resource to learn a lot of common frame traps or some kind of more generic answer to a lot of these problems so I didn't lose so much to them and end up salty lol
@GusMortis

Focus on the lesson to learn rather then the loss it handed you. Can't get too salty over something you have zero idea how to deal with. Think about it like not knowing what a frame trap is and getting smoked by them. Can't be too salty.

If I have an easier time getting what I want to come out in 3rd strike than I do in SF6, a much more precise input game, then that's saying something about the input system. The overlap problem is particularly bad because it means some inputs will basically have different requirements depending on who you're playing. If I'm playing juri I can just vaguely wave the stick to the front and I'll get a DP every time. If I play Ryu on the other hand I MUST end on down forward or I will get a super OR a fireball before I get a DP, despite using the exact same input I would have used with juri.
