Mike, you should get a self propelled JD mower. Man it's so easy to sit here and spend your money 😂😂😂. You know what you can spend on equipment. You guys are doing a great job with what you have. 👍👍👍😎

My favorite tractor is the one that runs, but if they all ran it would still be my IH 886 with full cab and AC. I have 6 tractors and 3 are running at the current time. One needs a rebuild, One is being restored, and one needs a clutch. I like your 4055.

Our Farm in Antwerp NY is similar size as yours. We also milked around 50 cows on the low end and 70 at the high end with 64 tie stalls. Glad to see yours still operating. What is the ceiling height in your original milking barn from the concrete to the beams? It looks lower than ours. I like the free-stall barn and just noticed there looks like at least 3 different roof pitches. Looks well built.

What percentage of small 40-70 cow diary farms are still profitable in your estimation? I've read that small dairy farmers have been experiencing major losses and they start being profitable above 150 cows. These are just averages, I'm just wondering if there are still small profitable dairy farms
@mikep7810

Thanks Randy. Our free stall barn was originally a small machine storage and got turned into a heifer barn when I was a kid. We added on the bedding pack part a couple years ago which is why it has multiple pitches

@@mikep7810 Do you guys practice strip cropping? A lot of small dairy operations in Wisconsin and Iowa do that which is interesting. There are different methods across US and Canada how dairy farmers produce feed. Strip cropping apparently prevents pests and diseases from spreading as effectively, limiting the use of pesticides. Also interesting is that diary farms do rotation more and use manure which protects the soil. Mass crop farms rely on chemicals and are killing their soil and plant the same crops in the same field every year

Plenty of things to buy.... Not enough milk check to go around 🤣🤣. How's your stalls working out? Now you've had them for awhile.... Is there anything you don't like about them? Do they flex if cows move over on top of you ? That would be nice.... No more getting crushed. Take care Mike.

Nice video. Answered a lot of questions about your farm operation. I’m born and raised John Deere. As to your tractors, I think you are pretty well set up for your operation. I absolutely love the 55 series tractors. Those were some of the best made and before electronics took over. Easier to maintain and work on. Now, new purchase. Did you pop for a 6 row planter to match the 6 row corn head?.😁

It all depends. Not everyone's situation is the same. There are so many features that go into why a farm could possibly go out of business. A farm our size definitely is not going to make you rich but I think you can make it. There isn't much room for error though

@@mikep7810 That's awesome to hear. Pennsylvania has the smallest average herd size in the US at 89 cows per farm. Numerous small diary operations there and the good news is that a lower percentage closed down last year than years before. In US as a whole 300 is the average herd size and that's because in western US there's mostly massive operations. In Canada it's the same out west but average size in Quebec (number one producer of milk in Canada) is only 60 cows and Ontario 90

@@mikep7810 If you produce all of your own feed and keep seeds and replant then I'd imagine you'd save a lot of money. Also another factor is read about is that the operating costs per cow on smaller farms is higher which is a big reason why many are unprofitable.
