Antarctica is the southern polar region of the globe, bounded from the north by the Antarctic Convergence. Includes Antarctica and adjacent islands and parts of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. The southern sections of these oceans within the Antarctic are often separated into a separate Southern Ocean.
Legal status: in accordance with the Antarctic Convention, which entered into force on June 23, 1961, Antarctica does not belong to any state. Only scientific activities are allowed.
McMurdo is an American Antarctic station, the informal capital of Antarctica, the largest settlement, port, transport hub and research center in Antarctica. It belongs to the US Antarctic Program, but also serves the stations and research programs of other states.
The cold pole of the Earth is located in this region. The average annual temperature on the mainland does not exceed 0°C, so it never rains here, only snow. Also in Antarctica are the point of the lowest relative humidity of the air, the strongest and most prolonged wind and the strongest radiation. The lowest temperature ever recorded was -93.2°C (-135.4°F) in Antarctica.
More than 80% of the planet's fresh water reserves are concentrated in the Antarctic glaciers.
