Anthem of Europe is the anthem of the European Union and the Council of Europe, which is one of the symbols of Europe. It is based on the main theme of the fourth movement of Beethoven's ninth symphony in an instrumental presentation and is performed at official events by both organizations.
Friedrich Schiller wrote the poem "Ode to Joy" in 1785 as "a celebration of the brotherhood of man". In 1823, after Schiller's death, Ludwig van Beethoven used the words of the poem in the fourth (final) movement of his ninth symphony.
The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe officially announced the European Anthem on 19 January 1972 in Strasbourg: Prelude to "Ode to Joy", 4th movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th Symphony.
