As a Brazilian, I have great respect towards Austria. Probably Austrians don’t know, but Maria Leopoldina, one of your Archduchess signed the decree of the Brazilian Independence, thus becoming the first person to rule Brazil as an independent country. In fact, the yellow in the Brazilian Flag represents the House of Habsburg and the Dragoons of Independence (Today part of the Presidential Guard) has the red and white colors to honor Austria, the country that the Mother of our independence was born.

As a Serb from the Voivodina region of the Austrian Empire, it was such a shame that Empire has perished. Our "liberators" from Kingdom of Serbia (Serbs called "Srbijanci") "liberated" us and now we're living in a 3rd world country with them. We are culturally much more closer to our Austrian, Hungarian, Croatian family (we lived for centuries together in the Habsburg Empire) than with Serbs from the then-called Kingdom of Serbia. The serbs hated the empire and wanted it gone. They didn't really care about their people, they just wanted territory and Austria-Hungary to suffer. If it was just about the good of the people, they could've just waited for Franz Joseph to die. So you see, Franz Ferdinand reforming the empire would've been bad for them, because they wouldn't have gotten the chance to get the balkan territories. Fun fact, Croats were some of the most loyal people in the realm, to their emperor and king. Many had engraved on their gravestones things like "fallen in service for our king". Also, Croat soldiers never deserted.

I see a lot of discussion and confusion about this anthem since the music is now used in Germany's national anthem. It was written in 1797 by Haydn, who also famously used it in one of his string quartets, with the words "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser" -- " God save Franz the Emperor". It became Austria's unofficial anthem. In 1841 Hoffman von Fallersleben wrote the words of the "Deutschland Lied", which extolled the idea of a united Germany and used the tune. It became the unofficial anthem of German democrats during the 1848 rebellions that almost resulted then in a united Germany. It was never the anthem of a German state before 1918. After WWI the first verse, which states "Germany, Germany, above all else" became the national anthem of Germany with this tune. The original meaning of the first verse was that all Germans should place the desire for a united Germany above loyalty to any local monarch. It was misused and misinterpreted by the Nazis to mean something else of course. Germany uses another verse of the anthem today -- "Unity, Justice, and Freedom for the German People". Meanwhile, after the abolishment of the Habsburg monarchy in Austria, it wasn't until 1929 that Austria used the tune with different words as their national anthem. That lasted until the Anschluss. Ironically, the national anthem of the German Empire under the kaisers was set to the same tune as "God save the King"!

Austria, or Austria-Hungary for that matter, had developed a remarkable set of constitutional and practical instruments to align ethnic and nationalist interests of all kinds of groupings within its borders, which amounted to as many as ten different people*s* the emperor ruled over. What came after was ethno-nationalism, totalitarianism, war, civil war, occupation, genocide, displacement, cold war and now, Brussels and Greta. Of course, Venice managed to steer clear of much of this, so yes, one might see the scene in the video as depicting atrocious suppression of Venetian liberties. Still not sure if they didn't get the short end of the stick when they traded their Kaiser for what happened then.

@@MatteoTN Very likely. Venice had been an indipendent republic for more than a millenia until it was assigned to the austrians in 1815. There were numerous uprisings, like the decleration of the San Marco Republic in 1848, quickly dispanded by the austrian army. 1866, Venice (and the Veneto region) was annexed by the recently unified Italy in the aftermath of the Austro-Prussian war. Not every venetian was happy under italian rule, but surely almost nobody, exept those who profited from it, was happy under austrian rule. It's nonsense to say otherwise.

I like how nobody ever cheers or smile or waive an hand back to those foreign rulers, for all their beatyful clothes, the fanfare of imperial anthem and the smiles of the royals, they only get the cold reception by the Venetians subjects: men's hats are off, but slowly, some clearly hesitating whether to pay respect or not, some on the balcony definetly do not. I remember how in the next scene the royals realize that and their smile become more and more fake, Sissi stops smiling, while the gondola carries them around and the Venetians keep staring at them, curious but ho, so cold, one of them ostentatiously turning his back to them.

@FloLPYT

Bundes (inkl. Österreich) entwickelte sich schon ab etwa 1800.

@Bernd DasBrot ... bilde dich mal ein wenig in Geschichte, bevor du hier so einen Mist schreibst.
