"Back then we had a thing called 'youtube', where you'd watch Gilbert Gottfried imitate old Groucho Marx talking about how back then, we had a thing called the movies..."

This is so funny. Groucho was quick. But during those interviews late 60s early 70s, it was beyond sad. Gilbert does the impression perfectly.

Some of those appearances you mention show Groucho to be in good form for a 80 yr. old man who had been smoking cigars since his early teens. Yes, in them he's nowhere near as spitfire fast as he was in his prime years of the 1930s/40s or even during his tenure as the You Bet Your Life quizmaster a decade before, but ole' Grouch's acerbic wit and sly humor remained largely undiluted by age up to around 1971. Gilbert's impression of a senile Groucho are largely based on post-1971 public appearances. Nearly everyone of these were ill-advised showings of a startlingly frail old man rambling off in a fragile voice Marx Bros. related factoids and anecdotes that had been told by him with much greater humor, zest, and aplomb in more healthy times. And this was Groucho on the days when all compromised cognitive cylinders were firing for him, mind you! All of which goes to show....man, getting old fucking sucks!

His 1969 appearance on Cavett was fantastic, as he was on very sharp form and came out with some excellent anecdotes and very quick witted remarks. However, you can see a noticeable decline in Groucho after that as subsequent appearances saw him getting slower and more rambling, sadly.

The lady being rolled down the stairs by a Richard Widmark was probably one of the most diabolical scenes ever. He ties her hand calls her an old bag and rolls her die the stairs and it tumbled face first.
