Hello to all my garage mechanics, today I show you how to change a coupling rod on a Renault Trafic identical to the Opel Vivaro and the Nissan Primastar.
Coupling rods are parts that wear out, sooner or later they will break, you'll notice a broken coupling rod by rumbling when driving over potholes or bumps, and also the TÜV will complain because it's a safety-relevant part, and so we're replacing them now. In my case, both coupling rods left and right were worn out, the procedure is exactly the same on both sides, so I will only show the case on the right side.
Before the video starts, please note that you do this on your own responsibility and I am not liable for any damage to the vehicle or injuries. This video is only meant for assistance.
To change the coupling rod, the car must be jacked up on both sides, because the stabilizer, where the coupling rod is screwed to, is otherwise under tension when only one side is jacked up, and then the installation of the new coupling rod becomes unnecessarily complicated. I put the car on sturdy wooden blocks because I had other parts of the front axle to replace and I don't trust jacks. For some screws I had to use long levers, so the jacks would have been too unstable for me.
Now, when you have secured the car against rolling and jacked it up, and have screwed the wheel off, you can already see the coupling rod. It is attached at the top and bottom with two nuts, which are often tight, so it helps if you spray them with penetrating oil beforehand. It may also make sense to clean the thread a little, then it will be easier for you.
To unscrew the nut, you have to counter the threaded rod on the inside, otherwise it will also turn. In my case, this was a socket for an Allen key. If you do this with a ratchet like me, then you have to set it to the opposite, so as if you wanted to close, so clockwise. Because the threaded rod does the opposite of the nut. At the bottom, I had the problem that I did not get with the Allen key due to rust and dirt, and with a Torx I spun it round. I then took a pair of pliers that you can lock, with that I gripped on the side with the rubber sleeve, pinching also some rubber, it's broken anyway, and then it worked.
When you have unscrewed the two nuts, you can simply take out the coupling rod. Remember how the coupling rod was installed, on which side the nut sits.
Now you can clean the contact surfaces a bit and then install the new coupling rod. Now set the ratchet to the opposite direction, as if you wanted to unscrew. Tighten the nuts properly, don't let them loosen again.
When the nuts are tight, you're done, wheel back on, car off and ready. I hope the video and my explanation helped you. As a small tribute to my work you would make me very happy by leaving a thumbs up, a comment and a subscription. Then I wish you a lot of fun with the repairs, saving that workshop money, and then see you next time. Bye.
