Navigating the landscape of mental health treatment and medication management is a complex and deeply personal journey. For many, this path involves making critical decisions about when and how to taper off medications that have been a part of their lives for years or even decades. In this episode, Alternative to Meds Founder Lyle Murphy delves into an important topic: stopping antipsychotics. Join us as we explore this topic by addressing well over one dozen frequently asked questions about how people have stopped antipsychotics.
Throughout the conversation, Lyle draws on his past experience and training. Before attending Life University School of Chiropractic, Murphy studied pre-med courses at West Georgia University. He earned a post-doctoral certificate in environmental medicine from SpiritMed. He trains doctors in medication reduction techniques and has contributed significantly to the philosophy of Alternative to Meds.
Are There Any Supplements To Help the Brain Recover During the Antipsychotic Withdrawal Period?
You can’t just jump off antipsychotics and expect things to go well, Lyle says. You have to walk down the same stairs that you walked up to get there, but do it slowly enough so you are not harming yourself. Some of the supplements that can help are the cofactors that break down dopamine, so the amount of dopamine that hits those receptors is not quite as impactful.
How Much Time Will It Take To Feel Better?
As a general rule, stopping antipsychotics is best described as a ten-to-one situation. That means that someone who was on antipsychotics for ten years may require a full year to wean themselves off that medication.
In addition, it’s important to remember that your antipsychotic use doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Unexpected life stressors may mean pausing the process of stopping the use of antipsychotics. Lyle gives the example of someone who takes on a new job as a trucker, which may affect how well they sleep and eat. The combination of negative health factors could complicate efforts to stop taking antipsychotics, and your overall health should be considered first.
