Another incredible video Wayne, I've been wondering when you'd post another sewing machine. I would say the machine is definitely pre 1879 as it doesn't have the 1879/1880 Raymond patented bobbin winder. One of my no. 1's has the patented bobbin winder but only 1879 is stamped on it (usually both 1879/1880 are stamped). The household is certainly rare and sought after by collectors all over. I'm wondering, what kind of condition was it in when you got it? Did you redo much of the artwork? Cheers

It was a complete make-over. From a distance the artwork looks okay, but within 6 feet it was easy to see a lot of degradation. Another problem is that this machine must have been decorated when the artist was tired because much of the artwork was crooked, out of position and had many overlaps. I almost wonder if it was sold at a discount because of this. Another clue that this is a pre-1880s machine is that the upper thread tensor is horizontal. In 1880 Raymond changed it to a vertical one. Thanks for commenting!

gorgeous machine . well done ! do you do the artwork yourself? i used to live near the guelph factory where that was made. the building was still there , but that was a while back.

Yes, I do the artwork myself. Most of it is decals, which take an average of 40 hours per machine to create, print and apply. Thanks for the comment!

Great idea to improve the foot and change the riveted pin, I guess we need to remember when it was made it was a cost saving rivet.

Excellent restoration Wayne. Interesting about the offset hand wheel shaft since the Little Wanzer also has that, as I am sure you know. I wonder which company thought of it first.

Actually, I never figured out why many machines have what looks like a slot for a screw driver yet no threads, until I worked on this machine. The amount of offset is so small that I never noticed it before. I'm going over all of our older machines to see how many others have it. Thanks for the heads-up on the little Wanzer, and thanks for commenting!

@@wayneschmidt490 I'd be interested to know what other machines you find with this feature. I've never seen it mentioned anywhere before, but it occurs to me that it may be common to many machines with 3 gear hand wheel drive.

@@bobmcdonnell6508 It appears our Little Wanzer, Wanzer A and Jones Swan neck have this system. I just guessing because I'm reluctant to take them apart to find out. But these all have three external gears, a slot in the main gear shaft and set screws to hold that shaft in place. None of our machines where the drive isn't taken off a main gear attached to the fly wheel have it.

@@wayneschmidt490 I have 4 Jones swan neck machines and I have to admit that I had never noticed the set screw on the back. I also have a Harris S, (actually a Haid und Nau Saxonia rebadged , Harris never made their own machines), which has an external geared drive, but only two gears not three. I have today dismantled the drive, and found that it also has the offset balance wheel shaft. Could this be a way for repairers to take up wear in the gears? If so they have kept it very quiet. Both the Harris and the Jones have real balance wheel retaining screws, rather than the imitation one of the Little Wanzer. I can feel the dismantling of a Jones swan neck coming on.

@@bobmcdonnell6508 You have four Swan Necks?! Wow. That's impressive. I checked our Saxonia and Vesta and you're right, they only have two external gears so they don't have the need for such an adjustment. I doubt the adjustment was for correcting for gear wear because if it was used to move the main gear closer to one gear to make top for the wear, then it would also be moving it farther away from the other gear, which I assume would have the same amount of wear. The Little Wanzer retaining screw is a fake? I didn't know that. It's been so many yeas since ours was restored I forgot about it. Interesting. Thanks for the information!

I have a Charles Raymond 1870s treadle. Love to show you a photo. It's in working order. I need to tighten belt up. Do you have an email you can share?

Dear Joyce, Thank you for commenting and congratulations on having a great machine. I'd enjoy seeing it, but for security reasons can't give out my email address on an open forum like KZitem. I noticed you have a KZitem channel. You could use a smart phone to make a video of it and post it for many people, including myself, to see. Most phones have an automatic KZitem posting option where all you have to do is input your channel's name.
