Cool video. Advice: you should not paint the machined surfaces where the frog meets the sled/body of the plane. Those should not only not be painted, but be honed flatter. You could still fix this to get your plane working more accurately. It will keep the frog from more easily shifting out of place over time.

Look awesome! I was a bit confused when you painted the casting where the frog sits though. I believe that part should be kept bear metal so that the frog sits solid on the body. Anyways you did a better job that I could ever do, so keep at it!

@@walshconcretecoatings When I restored my first plane i did the same. I had a few problems when using the it because the frog kept moving out of alignment. I asked a few people about it and all of them told me that the bottom of the frog and the top of casting on the plane should be left bare metal so that the frog stays in place when in use. When I fixed it, the plane worked like a charm! Honestly you did awesome on the paint job and that isn't much of an issue. I hope you keep doing tool restorations!! I really enjoy them.

The brass nut came up really nice in the Evaporust . I'm guessing cider or white vinegar would have done the job better or just wire wheel everything. Not the greatest ad for Evaporust . Ditto the remarks on the machined surfaces of the body and frog and painting the angle adjuster will cause problems. At least you didn't make new handles when unnecessary like others doing restoration. I kinda liked the paginated steel and cast iron look and just a light oil keeps cast iron looking good also ads your own signature.

What setup were you using to spray the clear coat on the wood?
@triune_blades

It turned very nice, but for future restorations I just wanted to give you a couple pointers. Before you paint you should also tape over the screw holes. The lateral lever on the frog and the mating surface of the frog and base aren't supposed to be painted - they're a machined surface. Lastly, in order to get the best result for the sole and cheeks of the body, stick sandpaper (spray adhesive works great) on a machined surface (I use a 3.5 ft long scrap piece of black granite from a countertop store) when all of the components are mounted. You sand with the factory machine lines which go parallel to the body. Overall this plane did turn out splendid. I'm glad it has been revived. I unfortunately missed out on getting this very same plane a few months ago. I saw it at the antique store and thought, "I'll get it tomorrow." Nope. It was gone. 😟 Anyways, keep it up! Subbed.

I watched a few of these restoration videos and I wonder if the chemicals are really needed if you wire brush it anyways? Also, you painted the frog mating faces which is going to cause problems. I've also seen people religiously sand the sole until it's flat but on a plane this big, it could take forever. Also did you sharpen the blade?
@walshconcretecoatings
4 жыл бұрын
Richard Wiles if you are referring to removing paint with chemicals it takes way longer to just use the wire brush. And multiple people have been telling me about painting the machines surface. I didn’t know much about this tool prior to cleaning it up. And I just repainted the surfaces that were already painted. As far as I know the tool is going to be a decoration

These tools were not painted. It's a baked on finish called "japanning". Regular paint is not nearly as duable and will flake off. "Decking" the flat surfaces is mentioned below and really the way to reestablish a flat/square surface.

Agree with not painting the mating surface of the frog. Also - did no see the sole being flattened, nor the iron/chipbreaker being honed. Otherwise, nice restoration.

You really shouldnt have painted the yoke, base of the frog where it meets the plane or the lateral adjustment lever. Those should remain clean. Especially the base of the frog and where it meets the plane body. You need to be able to adjust those areas and paint will throw off the accuracy and ability to adjust

Learn from an experienced craftsman how to give attention to the intricate points of the frog that need to be measured and filed and polished before assembly. The difference is something that looks nice but is useless compared to a useful precision tool.

You should have treated that wood with boiled linseed oil and left off the varnish. Better finish and won’t flake off and crack years down the road, but will continue to age with the wood and leave a nice finish you just don’t see much today anymore. Everyone wants to clear coat every single piece of wood they use nowadays. Was hard to watch you grind the shoe of the plane with an automatic steel brush 🤦🏻♂️ And for Gods sake man spray primer on an antique plane? Dude. You ruined this plane. Oil is all that thing needed. The frog needs to sit as flush with the plane as possible. Metal on metal is what you want, not spray paint between them.
