I've been having a terrible week and just wanted to sit and watch one of your videos because it's just comforting to have someone chatting about their everyday hobby stuff like a friend and then you went into your opinions on this whole trans issue and I just about cried. Being trans myself, I've struggled a lot with the whole JKR situation but I've come down to the same sort of decision that you have. The joy I found in those books is mine. She isn't the first creator whose opinions and actions have tried to ruin their work for me and I doubt she'll be the last. Anyway, thank you for always being a friendly voice.

After you spoke about JK Rowling I looked this story up. It seems like she is trying to address a health issue about menstruation and the handling of blood. It seemed like she was trying to be inclusive but then was slammed. I did not hear her cut anyone down unless it was a subtle way that I missed. Was she questioning by asking these 3 words I have never heard in my life and have been unable to find definitions thus far. Life is a learning process of evolving so be gentle with one another.

Damn, you impress me!! I have no idea if I’ll always agree with your point of view, but I know I’ll always think that your point of view is based on a very rational and analytical process coupled with a deep and abiding kindness. Like I said, I’m damn impressed. And considering the state our country is in, to have found a Vlogger like you does give me a little bit of hope where I generally have none. And here I thought it was all going to be about your dress! (P.S. That pleating board didn’t seem so horrible. What don’t you like about it?) (P.P.S. Atmos was the name of an invention a deluded genius created that he sold as a ‘green’ way of running your now ‘smart car’ automobile, but _actually_ it was a means of delivering a lethal toxin into the atmosphere in order to kill off the humans and leave the planet habitable for a militant race called the Sontarans, and this genius and his hand-picked prodigies. Soooo, if your husband’s stereo starts pumping out green gas one day, I suggest you throw it into some lawn and leaf bags and bury it in the yard. 😁 (Dr. Who; The Sontaran Strategem.)

I know you don’t want a big come t section debate or conversation and that’s fair enough. I’ve already had my conversations also, and they were hard and awful to have. But I did want to add one thing and that’s a recommendation for an absolutely amazing UK based trans charity that focuses specifically on helping gender non conforming and trans kids and their families. It’s called Mermaids- some may have heard of it thanks to HBomberguy’s amazing 60+ hour Donkey Kong livestream, what ch he did purely to spite a British transphobe (Graham Linehan) who attacked Mermaids and tried to have their funding cut. Harry was able to raise money, and that was amazing, but it was also last year. And being as they are in the UK, where transphobia seems to be going wild, they are attacked a lot, and could use the support. So that’s my contribution to this “conversation”.

LandOfKai I’m in Australia, and from what I can tell we’re not quite as bad as the UK in regard to transphobia, but we are still worse than the US. And it’s not like the US is a trans paradise. But a friend of mine has just finished a years long court/tribunal case against someone who consistently broke the law in regards to vilification and hate speech- for years. My mate win, which is great, but that other person is quite well known in the feminist community in my city, and pushes her beliefs hardcore. And unfortunately, I’ve found that a lot of the “feminist” community here is pretty transphobic. It’s just so discouraging. I could rant for a very long time about how awful terfs are, but this isn’t the place, so I’ll leave it at that. Still, I sincerely hope things are starting to get better.

I totally understand the aversion of the spirit animal question. I never would have thought about that until you said something, so thank you for passing that information onto me. I have some follow up questions though for you and the community: Do you ever get the urge to facepalm when you realize something you took for granted is harmful? Like, duh of corse asking people about their spirit animal would be appropriation of earth based religions, why would I never have thought of that!? Second, is there a way to ask a question about animals or favorite animals without appropriating earth based religions? As in “what’s you favorite animal?” Or “if you had to be an animal what would it be and why?” Because I think that question can tell you a lot about someone’s way of thinking. However, if those options seem to close to asking about a spirit animal I can understand that too. I’m just curious to learn, and be better.

Mary Blaylock it’s something that should be discussed absolutely. We should learn and talk about these things in an academic type of way. I agree that once a work is published, it ceases to be in the author's control, and starts to live its own life in the hands of its fans. Reading the books, I always thought the world of HP was an embarrassing testament to JK's very limited worldview, so it's been inspiring to see the fans enrich that world to better reflect the actual world we live in.

Yes, I absolutely love it when people point out where they made a mistake and leave it in a video because learning how it is fixed without having to scrap somethings is invaluable. Like Morgan Donner was showing how to cut triangular panels with one edge on the straight grain and one on the bias and then showing how they had to be flipped and seven so that you don't get 2 bias edges together, then she messed up and didn't flip one so she pointed it out when editing the video and added an explanation of why she didn't rip the seam and re sew I think it had to do with having it sewn to a lining that wouldn't allow it to stretch, but it also mentioned that it could be hung and allowed to stretch and then trimmed or just don't make that mistake like she did. And countless videos where someone as shown a shot of, "this is why the directions said don't sew these pieces together first, and I should have listened" or whatever because most of us looking to KZitem for help are not going to be mistake proof, but we may not have the skills and experience to fix our mistakes, so to me seeing the "pros" or just the much more experienced make mistakes and work them out is great!

It’s a great sci-fi series where the earlier books are really good but there is definitely leveling up over the years and the writing and stories get better and better. The series won a Hugo and some of the novels have too. I would absolutely recommend it if you haven’t read them. The audiobook versions are great too.

1. Love your POV and solution on the loving HP and not supporting JK’s stance on trans people. Wholehearted love and support that. Man do I really need to reorganize my budget to allow for more donations in my life....gotta get off furlough first maybe. 2. Adore the Hogwarts Express pin and it is the perfect accent to your dress. 3. So excited for the train tracks! Can’t wait to see how they come out. Stay safe!!

Bespoke shoes are so exciting! I've had the privilege of having two custom shoes made for me. I have lymphedema in my legs so my legs and feet are always swollen and shoes can be am issue. I've had a pair of Wesco boots made and a beautiful pair of dual sport motorcycle boots made. I loved the process and the result and I hope you htas much fun as I did!

Well now I know what I'm going to start listening to once I'm UTD on CR. I love James Marsters and had no idea he'd read any book series. That sewing machine was a steal!! Can't wait to see it in action. Also, I agree that the pleating on the overskirt just isnt it. Maybe on the underskirt? Hard choice. Currently reading: Smoke gets in Your Eyes by Caitlin Doughty Listening/watching: CR

In all honesty, I thought JK Rowling would have been ok with the whole trans community, because I feel like in the Harry Potter universe that they would have been perfectly fine with what ever anybody chooses as long as they did their part to keep the population up.

I personally would probably enjoy seeing the hand-sewing itself too, not as an example/tutorial, but just because I find crafting satisfying to look at (I also really enjoy YT-channels like Make N' Create for example). If you are afraid of having extra work to film/frame the sewing, I think you could have the current framing as is, just slightly zoomed out to show your hands. Having said all that, your comfort and enjoyment while making these videos is more important than my personal preferences of aesthetics 😊. Especially if you dislike the feeling of people staring at you working (or as we say in dutch: "op je vingers gekeken worden"), feel free to not show your hand sewing. I just wanted to give my honest feedback (and explain why some people might want to see it without viewing it with a critical eye/as a tutorial), but I will enjoy the vlogs regardless as long as you keep having fun doing them 😋

I really enjoy the sped up sewing bits, something about it is extremely satisfying to watch. As for the hand sewing, if you don’t want to video it that’s fine, you do you x JK = urgh. Totally agree with your viewpoint on this YES to the pattern org video, mine are a mess & I need some tips! The Singer is gorgeous, I have a Singer 99 & it’s a pleasure to use. I’m in agreement about the pleating but I’m not sure why. I thought it was fine on the table but not on the drees form.. Thank you for another great video, it made my morning 😊xx

I would LOVE to see a pattern tour! I'm always here for suggestions (especially bustle), pattern reviews and reorg videos. ❤️ Thanks for sharing your thoughts about tithing - that's smart and helps me a lot. (I saw it on IG but I don't think I commented). One thing I notice is that the amount that any merch costs is something I consider more now. It's made me a more critical consumer, so thanks for that! Lindsay Ellis did a video where she talked about death of the author and JK's deal, and the money element (her profit) was a big part of my takeaway from that. I thought it was a good watch if anyone is interested -- again, your system is a good solution to the issue Lindsay raised. Love how the overskirt is turning out -- it looks amazing!

All authors have a problematic side in their personal lives. No reason why we should stop reading their books. I think people use a different part of the brain for writing. Even Tolstoy had his downsides. Arthur Ransom, who wrote childrens books was a spy in Russia during the revolution,or even a double agent according to some sources. J.K.Rowling was very insensitive to air her views so bluntly though. Private opinions are perhaps better kept private. Its not necessary to offend people, and its not her field of interest. Being famous doesnt mean she has a right to upset people. It must have felt like Father Christmas getting on a Social and Political soapbox to her fans. Like a slap in the face from a friend.

Hello there, as an absolute beginner I really liked this video! I'm cutting out the fabric pieces for my very first simple skirt and I just don't know how Bernadette makes things look so easy 😅 I mean she made me believe I could be able to sew some nice things, but it's good to hear I'm not the only one having to struggle a bit in the beginning.

I would love to see how you organize your patterns! I love the second round of trim, it looks so good! That little pin is really cute too. You could always do extra pleats on the skirt with no pleats on the apron? I try to donate to my values when I can (sometimes that donation is my time). Its hard living in this world where something that made a huge positive impact in our lives, also has a negative impact on the larger community. Trying to off-set that for the positive is a worthwhile endeavor.

Good thing I never got into HP. I bought the first book, read it half way through, thought it was badly written and edited (which was changed in later editions but in that first edition you had passages where you actually saw where the editor had changed wording and phrases and/or tried to) and binned the whole book. The Trevor Project is a good org, so your tithing is well spent. More power to you for having bespoke shoes. :D

Love how the trim turned out!!! Wow that sewing machine looks amazing! Your thrifting trip looks like it was fun and with good company too! I agree with you on HP, I can love it detached from it's writer. This week... my baby started Kindergarten, I spent time sewing masks, started knitting a hat, sewed a ham, ignored some (not all) housework, started rereading (audio-style) Golden Compass, and you're never too old for YA fiction! ;) Today I'm zigzagging fabric to wash and then want to make a new cover for my small ironing board and a cozy (?) for my iron to protect the ceramic coating on the soleplate. (what was I thinking?)

SCREAMING THAT SINGER SEWING MACHINE IS TO DIE FOR. That's amazing that you found it in such great condition. I'm still making face masks. Humble brag, they're coming out much better after three weeks of struggling. The pleats are still the biggest challenge. I've never done pleats before and I'm determined to get good at making them. I'm avoiding the bad air and virus by staying quarantined. I live in the East Bay, (I guess about an hour from you) hi neighbor! I'm new to the costuming world and am enchanted by everything. Oh No!! You and Abby got fleeced at the market!!! I love the new to you Singer 66, nice decals. I don't think the sewing machine guy meant 1700's maybe a model or remade one. The earliest real sewing machine i saw was in France from 1830's they think called a Thimmonier. He started making machines in 1823 and is considered the first producer of sewing machines. Earlier ones were mostly a builder showing their idea for Patent post 1790's and "one off's" Your Singer 66 is a low shank instead of back clamping so not a 66-1. To date your machine is easy just go to ISMACS and click research, then singer then dating. I think your Singer might be in the Fxxxxxx serial number series from 1910-1920 from Elizabethport.

Impressive work on that trim, Noelle! I’m still perseverating over making a basic chemise, lol. In reality I really want (and need) to make some nice linen shirts for work in fairly clean lines but using techniques like flat felled seams. Linen prewashed and prepped....check. Linen threads....check. Patterns and concepts...check. Time...dang. Although I’m EXTREMELY grateful for being employed and will never complain about that, N Covid-19 has changed how I have to do things. After hours free time has been significantly crimped.

Congrats on starting a Vintage Singer collection! ✨ I was gifted a 1904 128 Sphinx treadle over the summer & am now happily summersaulting down the rabbit hole. I even sewed most of my Tudor gown on it. But I just got a 20’s 66 for $10 in a table so my partner is starting to get concerned. 😋 Check our the vintage sewing machine garage on the tube here for TONs of info on them (with, sorry to say, a lot of long winded, if not very informative lectures chalk full of goodies if you can make it through..😊🤓) Also, if no one has said yet there’s an easy to google singer serial # site that will tell you exactly when yours was born. Have fun! 🥳 Also, I’m all here for a pattern video! But also can we see your AD shoe collection!?!!! 🤤🤤🤤

Traditional Literature doesn't speak to everyone! I know a lot of English teachers these days are adding YA/SciFi/etc to their curriculum and showing that good books don't have to be old or pretentious to have meaning! :) I'm doing a weekly bookclub with my family and it is fun to see how surprised my aunts and uncles are when there is such depth to these books they never considered! (My mom and I have always had the same taste in books!) :) I don't care for catch-22, to kill a mockingbird is great though. We just read one of my absolute favorites, Survival by Julie Czerneda (1st in Species Imperative series) and I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND! There are aliens, salmon biology, spies, romance, and more! Content warning for universe level threats that might be a bit stressful in these days of dread! The first book ends on an upsetting cliffhanger, so be aware that you will likely want all three to get the uplifting ending :)

The process sounds long, but wow!!! I love the pin!!! I agree!!! Harry Potter is ours now!!! I don’t worry about other people’s opinions on things. What makes my heart happy is what I care about. Tithing is a great option. I like the way you’re dealing with it. I love the idea of the pattern organization. I’d love to see it. Yay!!! Abby and Abby’s Mom are on your channel too!!! Cool antique fair!!! The trunk reminds me of the one Lucy got locked in on I Love Lucy!!! Yikes!!! A 1915 machine for $15!!!!!! It’s so beautiful!!! I have a Singer 401a that my Granny got in 1964. It’s still a workhorse I love using it. The old Singers are great machines!!! I understand wanting to not show your hands as you talk. Yes you’re going to have issues when you try to show someone. A virtual sewing circle is cool. Ok. I have to pause and work my third shift of the day. I’ll add another comment after work and finish up. Instead of spirit animal, ask what animal do you most identify with. See you in a bit.
