In this video we demonstrate how to recharge and operate an antique soda-acid fire extinguisher and we explain some of the chemistry involved along the way. I DO NOT RECOMMEND YOU TRY THIS AT HOME. These extinguishers have been known to explode if corroded or if the hose is blocked. This is in part why we used a weaker acid solution, thereby reducing the amount of pressure that could be produced.
The name of this channel references the Chemical 14 fire company that was once stationed in our building. A Chemical company was essentially a giant soda-acid extinguisher on carriage wheels that was either hand pulled or horse drawn. At the fire scene it would be rotated upside down causing a bottle of sulfuric acid to mix with a sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and water solution. The resulting carbon dioxide would pressurize the tank and propel the water through a hose.
