Carriage Straps (also known as Drawbands) are an extremely common cause of antique typewriter failure. You'll know you have the problem when your carriage won't advance on it's own while typing. The carriage / platen will also slide without resistance when pushed left. These straps were originally made of materials like fabric and sometimes animal intestines, and they inevitably fail. And finding someone to fix it can be challenging.
I made this video because I found nothing useful on the internet on how to fix the problem, nor were there any KZitem videos at the time. Fix it yourself with this easy to follow video!
If you want to get the repair material I used, choose the 60 Pound test fishing line on Amazon, Wal-Mart, Fishing Store, etc.
To lubricate, I use Hoppe's gun oil - it won't gum up over time. I like the extension tip to reach needed areas.
While I used the original anchor to attached the replacement strap, it could have been directly tied to the main spring wheel as well. As in the video, just use a small dab of superglue to fix the tied knots so they do not unravel later.
While this demonstrates the repair on a Woodstock Model 5N (from the early 1930's), the concepts apply to all other brands as well.
Good luck with your repair!!! If you succeed, please comment to let me know :)
