This was excellent! I have a D9 in it’s treadle waiting for TLC, I’m looking forward to your next video (as usual). I had no idea they were so expensive-I wonder if Singers were just as expensive. Thank you

In 1895, very cheap sewing machines could be purchased for as little as $2.00, equal to $40.00 in today's economy based on the percentage of household income. A good Singer in 1895 was 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of a new Wheeler and Wilson 9, around $2,000 to $3,000 today. That's a ton of money, but women spent an average of two hours a day making and repairing cloths for the entire family by hand. They could accomplish the same amount of work in 1/10 the time with a sewing machine. In effect it gave them an extra two hours a day, every day for the lifetime of the machine, which was designed to last decades of constant use. To save money, it was common for several women living close together to pool their money and purchase a machine they would take turns using. Having a sewing machine also made it possible for women to sew cloths fast enough to make extras to sell, which also reduced the impact of a sewing machine's cost on the family budget. Opps! Sorry about that data dump that was probably more than you wanted. I hope this answered your question. Thanks for the comment!

HI I have one of these with a coffin top. Is it true that people sat on the coffin top to sew?

I doubt that because they would be so low to the floor their knees would be near their chin.

Hi if you don't use the original base .. can I please have the "hold down " latch :) . Is the latch with the butterfly nut witch is holding the swing machine lock on the base :) . I have one and the latch is missing . Every time when I see my 9 I remember about that latch .

While I've mounted the machine on a decorative base for display, we still have the original case and need to keep it complete for when we pass the machine on to its next owner. Sorry.

Where can I find the video on the D9 you mention? I would love to see a video of how to disassemble/assemble the thread tensioner.

I doubt that it is you deleting my comments and info I was trying to help you with, I guess it is YT not liking my links to photos of a WW9 and WW8 and reference to a book by F Brian Jewell. All the best

I had no idea your comments were being blocked or deleted. I certainly haven't done so. I've heard KZitem can be a bit draconian about blocking any links they want. I assume that's what's going on with yours. Sorry. We have a copy of Mr. Jewel's book and often refer to it. I hope all is well with you and yours. Thanks as always for commenting!

@@wayneschmidt490 I did type quite a lot and it is a bit disheartening to lose what I have said, I wss including image links to "google albums" you woud think that would be ok. The odd thing is it takes your comments and they look OK but if you refresh or comeback later they are GONE. I do wonder how many other YT comments people leave and they never realise they were deleted ? all the best

@@wayneschmidt490 I have two books by Jewell "veteran sewing machines" dated 1975 and there have been quite a lot of info added to the "antique sewing machines" dated 1985. One interesting bit of info that might be true Price varied £9 - £15 UKP offices in Cheapside London "improved" versions of the machine were made in the UK and Germany The UK company was mentioned was Brittania Manufacturing Company Colchester, there are some interesting links online I would put it here but will it be deleted ;-))

@@wayneschmidt490 pity I can't put links to my UK WW8 and WW9 which has a later bobbin holder and a different handwheel Serial number I have found Serial no 2544138 is my machine Others I have spotted on sale in the UK 2398019= 1898 older model than mine 2810160= 1904 same as my D9 but just before Singer took over Search YT for "Serviced Antique Wheeler & Wilson No. 9 Treadle Serial no 3100903" I think I found comments about a different needle Boye18 - 127x1 There is a good WWW pages with round, flat, curved size info + an Excel sheet with them in, I am sure you have seen that. My WW8 has an interesting lower tension that seems to GRIP the lower thread rather than tension it, this is done with a knurled bolt mechanism I think my Wheeler and Wilson is 1882? Serial number 312417

@@jdhtyler I have had, and have heard about people, having all sorts of problems with KZitem commenting. I'm sorry this is pestering you. The 1882 date for your WW8 sounds about right. I've never heard of the lower tension system you mentioned. It would be interesting to see. Have you watched my video about the WW8? If not, here's the link: kzitem.info/news/bejne/zJWar5awfH6kaoY This is also a test to see if KZitem messes with this comment.
