They developed new weapons, change in laws of government and ideology and the knights didn't like the change so the leader of the knights stages a rebellion against the kingdom and it's changed and the nights during the rebellion are swiftly defeated and outlawed for there betrayal. Agree. In history firearms became a new form of protection making knights obsolete. I think the film would have been better if firearms were the reason why knights were outlawed or just not needed anymore. This would create a guns kill message while at the same time say that violence with swords is bad. Also, I think Justin should have grown as a character becoming a true knight which includes performing chivalrous acts, fighting monsters, and saving people instead of stupid exposition and his training. Lastly, Sir Clorex should have been the main villain as a knight in shining armor that Justin reads about and wants to be like him only to figure out that he’s bad. This would work as Justin realizing that not every knight is good, it would emphasize the idea “Don’t always trust a knight in shining armor because some are men who has never had their armor truly tested.” Justin learns that being a knight isn’t about wearing shining armor nor winning a princess’s heart, it about doing what’s right to protect others. I don’t like Justin’s appearance because he looks too similar Hiccup and Linguini, I think Justin should have looked handsome but still be young because his big nosed wimpy appearance, personality, and lack of character growth makes it hard to believe he would become a knight nor a hero. I think he should have grown as a character who starts off as an unskilled inexperienced young boy who dreams of winning the heart of a princess to a full grown brave might armored knight performing epic heroic acts while learning what being a knight really means. His character should have a had flaws, growth, and change from a silly fool to a serious warrior. This would be like Berserk but for kids. Just my opinion.

You know the story has potential. What if instead of knights becoming illegal just because, maybe it was coup against the queen. A band of knights was paid off to turn on the queen, and Heraculio and Justin's grandfather managed to fight them off, but it cost the latter his life. The queen was scarred from the experience because she had always believed in chivalry and what being a knight was supposed to represent, and to have her own men turn on her for money and power left her disillusioned and disheartened by the whole concept to the point she outlawed knighthood itself. Heraculio sees the injustice in this, especially when he and his friend were faithful to their vows and protect her. He refuses to lay down his sword and goes into hiding. Years later, Justin has been secretly reading stories about famous heroes and knights, including his grandfather, who had been renowned for his chivalry and kindness, which slowly gives Justin the desire to become a knight himself. However, he knows he must keep this hidden from everyone and especially his father, who has hated knighthood ever since those false knights took his father away. The only one who knows about his desire is his grandmother, who, understanding the trauma done against the queen and grieving from the loss of her husband, thinks the law goes too far banning all knights and secretly encourages Justin to pursue his dreams. Eventually, he trains to become a knight while being confronted with the reality that knights are people too, and they have their own faults and vices, even his grandfather and that being a knight won't be as simple as saving princesses and being nice. This reality is shown off in the form of Heraculio, who has become the very knight he once helped defeat and once to overthrow the queen, even if it cost the people everything. In the end, Justin vows to be as good of knight he can be and the queen lifts the ban after realizing she's been unjust due to the trauma she suffered.

Showing rather than telling is something a lot of film schools NEED to do a better job of teaching their students. (That and being willing to speak up during the storyboard phase). They should be able to draw a singular picture with zero words at all, and be able to tell a whole story with it. I just don't really understand how so many films miss that mark! Since I can't attach images or links without KZitem getting salty, I'mma describe an image without outright saying, or implying anything, and see if I can accomplish that goal. A small, canvas wing biplane rests in a grassy field. There are matted lines of grass behind the tires, slowly becoming more compressed the closer to the middle of each line you go. There are two small burn patches in the grass as well, below the exhausts. The propeller is a blur, with the yellow tips showing up as a concentric circle. Nobody is currently in the plane. A man dressed in a WWI pilot's uniform is on his knees beside the machine, with his head in his hands, facing away from the viewer. A second biplane of similar pattern is about 400 feet in front of the first one I described, completely crumpled over. It's riddled with holes, and a small patch of poppy flowers lies just in front of where the nose is dug into the floor. As the great Gordon Ramsay once put it, "What's so f***ing complicated about this!?"

But no fear as I create a short summary for those wanting to read and give a plot to better fix this!! But I’m going to be using three key points Sir RaisorBlade, knight of reviews made. Well more like points I find interesting enough to be fixed up since I honestly see this movie working Point 1: the apparently large number of laws that really shouldn’t be present in a film! I agree with RB on the point that it would have been interesting to have Justin make a jab at his father’s insane number of laws that ended up having his own father killed since that is perfect story writing and from there we can build up a subplot where the two just don’t even talk to each other after Justin leaves as we could instead have focus on the father even more as he tries to see where he went wrong only to figure out that he is being too protective and that these laws he made are only causing more pain than peace. Oh yeah I think the Queen in this idea should be a bit stubborn on the changing the law thing. The number of laws in this film is insane and I do think they should have put a heavy focus on that since it connects with the knights being outlawed as we could also explore an idea where some of the knights who became outlawed actually split up when Dale destroyed the grandfather shortly after the laws were made and we might have them appear during small parts until Justin who realises that the knights were okay and are kind of needed tries to reunite them. Though that is sequel material and we aren’t talking about a sequel today Point 2: Character development isn’t here?! How can a romance story happen without development?!!! This part is brief as the most important thing this film needs is character development! Especially for a romance plot and/or subplot!!! As a guy who loves stories and makes his own I really do believe that character development is one of the most important things for a story to be excellent. Even if the movie plot is bad as long as character development is achieved then it may save the bad plot. Anyway the focus should be on the relationship with Justin, non-Astrid whose name I forgot and the other people of that castle since it would be amazing if they all had something in common. Heck we might as well throw in the classic sparring match with the love interest Point 3: make a better ending that makes sense to plot. And thoughts so far while adding more development for Dale I know I’m rambling on and probably to the point where I’m pretty much reinventing the film, but I really do think these changes may make it better or even more original than who it’s trying to imitate at most. It doesn’t seem that bad when you look at it in the perspective of what it could have been, but while watching the video more I can see that the film had so much potential. Even Dale has so much potential for a villain as it would be more powerful if the finale had Dale and Justin fight with personal beliefs being put to the test as we could have Dale go so far into his goal that he loses the sense of right and wrong, only believing that becoming king himself can make a world free of law as that is what causes the kingdom to go on its bad path in the first place. However Justin could believe that the law could help keep peace and that the knights are meant to help maintain it, not corrupt it. With these points I think it could change the film and make it better. Oh and have non-Gaston become a knight since Wynaut? And as RB said make him do something useful that can move the plot somewhere! Actually focus on character development and plot to make it better Alright this is long, but I can see the amount of ways to fix this film, but most likely will never happen. This was an Edoko essay and I hope this could help anyone in making a story or something special. If anyone actually read this whole thing

If people want a prime example (no pun intended) of show don't tell, they should seriously go watch Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal. There is a character who speaks in the last...two episodes of season one? And the main character says nothing until the last 5 minutes of the first season. And yet, it's an amazing show

The odd thing is there are a couple of interesting ideas that could be made into a fantasy movie. I’m not saying they’ll be good but they’d be a little less boring than this. Like the whole justice vs law thing with knights. There’s something there. And mix it up with Justin’s relationship with his dad. I think that needed to be developed a little more. (Yh I know HTTYD did that). Or the stuff with the ‘knights’ and their reasons to be ones either for fame, old days of glory or just to do what is right. They could’ve done something a little different there instead of another animated hero’s journey. Honestly the stuff I remember and liked was the stuff with Talia and the wizard. Honestly a wizard with a split personality sounds funny and clever for a fantasy story.
