Antonio Mancini was one of the leading figures of 19th century European painting. During his lifetime, he was admired and emulated by Italian and foreign artists, in addition to being widely acclaimed by critics and the general public.
The present work, circa 1882, belongs to a group of youthful self-portraits made during the so-called ‘period of madness,’ around the time that Mancini spent several months in a mental institute. Here the artist portrays himself bust-length with one of his renowned painted plates in the foreground. These plates were ordinary ceramic dishes on which he created full-length figures, faces or portraits, painting the images directly with his fingers. His habit was to give these plates to a restauranteur or friend in exchange for a meal.
