The Antrim team of the late 80's and early 90's were usually able to challenge the big guns, and it's a shame Antrim have been unable to mount a serious challenge for so long now. They are most remembered for beating Offaly in 1989 but they were desperately unlucky not to beat Kilkenny in 1991 and gave Cork a right rattle in 1986. Their 1993 semi with Kilkenny was bizarre, they were well on top in the first half but collapsed in the second.

Too much infighting in the county has hindered progress, the Belfast club won't talk to the clubs from the country side, which is a real shame is there is potential there.

ephabouyed There's a problem with unity in some counties. It seems to be more prevalent in counties not accustomed to winning the big prizes. Ill feeling can decimate a team's chance for success if cliques develop and club teammates isolate themselves from one another. That's what you've described in Antrim. At the end of the day it'd be easier to set animosity aside if players felt they had a tangible chance of winning a big prize.

ephabouyed My Father is from Tipperary and was at the semi final against Kilkenny in 1943. My Father always said that the friction between the city clubs and the country clubs always existed.

I would love to see Antrim hurlers along with Down hurlers and Derry hurlers, win an All-Ireland.

Antrim might not have won on the big day. But a more gallant team you will never see. Them boys are the pride of our provence.

One person who'se overlooked is the man who put this Antrim team in place before Jim Nelson was the manager is Sean McGuinness, he should have been at least mentioned here.

Sorry to hear that Jim died yest. By the sound of things, he was a true gent. And he did so much for the pride and spirit of Antrim communities amidst hostile times.

I'll never forget that semi final of '89 (the win V Offaly). The energy of it. All that Antrim team were heroes that I could name off to this day. The Clare minors were playing V Galway which we won, so my father brought me along as a 9 yr old's first day out in the big smoke. I also think it was Marty Morissey's first live game commentating for RTE.

It was a Shame, Antrim didn't built on from 1989. Their Clubs teams for example do well, put you say isn't transferring to Senior level. People forget Ulster teams have great hurlers. Not Just Antrim, not forgetting Down and Derry.

I hate to say this but Jim Nelson didn't handle the All-Ireland well and they let the occasion get to them and got massacred by Tipp, Nicky English equalled Antrim's total on his own. But in all fairness, no team in Ireland would have come close to Tipperary in 1989 as they were on a mission having lost the previous final.

ephabouyed Remember that was Tipperary's first all Ireland win since 1971. Antrim have the ability to left a McCarthy, unity, self belief and determination is all that's needed.

In fairness Nicky English is one if the forwards in the history of the game. He didn't achieve 6 All Stars by accident. And with a player like Pat Fox feeding him, it was always going to be difficult to keep his score down.

They met a brilliant team in Tipperary with their best player playing brilliantly. I wouldn't criticise them at all. English was sublime that day, and his teammates weren't bad either.
