The jackal-headed god Anubis is one of the most famous and fascinating deities in Egyptian mythology. He was the first lord of the underworld, the conductor of souls, and the god of death. Anubis played several critical roles in ancient Egypt, evolving over time as Osiris took his place as ruler over the underworld. However, Anubis has always personified justice and respect for the dead - a key feature of ancient Egypt and its people.
