Bob: Always good to see, listen to and read your books (Dialogic OD). IMO, organizations are messy and laden with managers and leaders who are frankly clueless and end up hoisting change and guidance that align to their biases yet are easily detected as wrong. And so, employees are dealing with the anxiety of being forced to listen to and follow those who should not be in this job. The typical pyramid structure of organizational power and relationships (tops, mids, and bottoms - B Oshry) ends up reinforcing the concept of who knows and who should we be listening to And so, those who do the work or who touch the customer are the ones generally closer to the truth of what works and what doesn't. Yet, their views are seldom heard or responded to. Yes, I am describing a less mature system yet structure can hide the realities and silos functions limit insight and collaboration needed to deal with generative change. I witness this all the time in every organization I've worked in or volunteered for. In essence, we are papering over a major flaw in how systems operate and how employees are in many cases psychic prisons (G Morgan). Jobs come and go and most folks know this and are constantly on the look out for when the ramp will close down. They continue to network, build skills, make themselves valuable, don't threaten and save face. And yet, there are leaders whose incompetence is sleds discovered or if known not dealt with until the system is full of emotional discord. Yes, the work goes on. And we wonder why the Gallup Engagement survey shows only 38% are truly engaged. Or why less than 40% answer surveys or vote. Because nothing is really done. And so most soldier on, try to keep their jobs and try to make more money so they can feed their families and maybe take a little vacation. So, address this reality. How do we cull the chaff from the wheat? When will real 180 surveys will be held and managers will removed / demoted held accountable? What other techniques can be used to have people act like adults (E. Berne)?
