This documentary by EMMRC Kolkata staffer Moasunep Kichu deals with rituals and pastime activities of the Ao tribe of Nagaland.
Tiger hunting was once common in Ao society. And of course, head hunting was practiced as a ritual and also a form of self-defence. A man who had hunted many heads would be considered a hero and very popular among the womenfolk.
Top was a popular game among the boys. However, in the olden days playing of tops was prohibited during the period during the rice cropping season. The earth was considered to be pregnant at the time and it was feared that playing tops at such times would bring illness and misery.
Community fishing was a most awaited pastime in which young and old men alike participated. They used creepers, barks, or fruits as bait.
Lately, many new recreational activities have been around. Head hunting or tiger hunting have become a thing of the past.
