UWBadgersfan28 Thanks! I'm not quite sure what you are asking. I have a video about understanding the Tension Force (www.flippingphysics.com/tension-force.html), but the basic gist is that the Tension Force is in the direction of the rope, wire, cable, etc.

UWBadgersfan28 Your approach to Free Body Diagrams for all the AP Physics tests should be the same. I outline the strategy in my video "5 Steps to Solve any Free Body Diagram Problem". (www.flippingphysics.com/5-steps-fbd.html) Draw the Free Body Diagram without breaking any forces into components. (This first free body diagram is an answer and shows that you understand all the forces, their directions and relative magnitudes.) Then break forces into components and re-draw the Free Body Diagram. (This second Free Body Diagram is the one you use to solve the problem via summing the forces.)

I have a question, as you said in the video that the frictional force always opposes motion, then what would the direction of the friction be in the case that the wheels of a car is pushing backwards on the ground? Would the frictional force face forward and help the car to move?
@FlippingPhysics
8 жыл бұрын
+Erica Hu This is a good question which I get from time to time. I should make a video of this eventually. Here goes: Picture a car accelerating to the right. Now look at where the tire meets to road. Imagine slamming on the accelerator pedal and "spinning out" the tire. Where the tire meets the road, the tire is moving to your left (or backwards) and the force of friction is to your right (or forwards). The force of friction here is opposing the leftward (or backward) motion of the tire relative to the ground. So the force of friction is to the right (or forward) and causes the car to accelerate to your right (or forward).
